UMass hockey program reloading

The University of Massachusetts hockey program continues to restock with players from the Omaha Lancers team in the United States Hockey League.

A week after Lancer goalie Jeff Teglia committed to play for UMass, his teammate Troy Power decided to join him and gave the Minutemen a verbal commitment on Monday.

Power is a 5-foot-11 forward from Camarillo, Calif., who turned 20 earlier this week. He has blossomed offensively with 26 goals and 15 assists through 55 games this season, and has a plus-minus rating of plus-19. Power had 10 goals and 18 assists in 104 games before this season.

SOFTBALL SWEEPS - After not giving up a hit in nine innings of work last weekend, UMass pitcher Sara Plourde extended that streak to 14 innings before La Salle finally got a bunt single against her in the first game of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader in Philadelphia on Thursday.

By then the Minutewomen were firmly in control, rolling to an 8-1 win in game one and a 10-0 win in game two.

Plourde gave up two hits and a run while striking out 14 in the first game before giving way to Bailey Sanders. Plourde did not allow a hit in four innings in game two and struck out eight before Sanders took over.

Plourde (18-5) had plenty of support as 23rd-ranked UMass (19-7, 4-0 A-10) hit five home runs in the two games.

Kyllie Magill had two solo home runs in the first game. Meghan Carta (4-for-7, three runs, four RBIs combined) had a home run in each game, while Carly Normandin hit her first of the season, a grand slam, in the nightcap.

The Minutewomen head north to New York and will face Fordham in a doubleheader at noon Saturday.

Those games will be for at least a share of first place in the A-10 as the Rams (24-6, 4-0 A-10) are also undefeated in conference play. Saint Louis also has a conference record of 4-0.

TENNIS SWEEPS - The Minutewomen defeated Sacred Heart 7-0 on Thursday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn.

MEN'S LACROSSE HEADS TO PENN STATE - The Minutemen (6-2, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association) will put their No. 9 ranking on the line while trying to solidify their standing in the conference as they head to Penn State for a noon game Saturday at Jeffrey Field.

The Nittany Lions have struggled this season at 1-7. They opened the season with six straight losses, beat St. John's and then fell to Bucknell on Tuesday. This will be Penn State's first CAA game.

UMass is trying to win its third consecutive game this season and its fourth straight against Penn State, who moved from the ECAC into the CAA with the Minutemen.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE IN PHILLY - The women's lacrosse team (5-6) will try to even its record and improve to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play at 1 p.m. Saturday when it travels to North Philadelphia to face Temple.

The Minutewomen beat the Owls 16-4 last year at McGuirk Stadium, their first win over Temple since 2002. UMass has not won at Temple since 1999. The Owls are 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the A-10 this season.

BASEBALL CHARLOTTE-BOUND - The struggling Minutemen (2-11, 1-2 A-10) will have a challenge this weekend as they head to Charlotte for a three-game series beginning at 6 tonight. There are single games Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at noon.

The 49ers are 16-6 and 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play.

MISCELLANEOUS - The UMass men's and women's track and field teams open their outdoor seasons at the UConn Invitational at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The women's crew will head east to face New Hampshire, Williams, MIT and host Holy Cross in a meet at 9:10 a.m. Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.
