UMass gets hockey goalie

After losing three players to the professional ranks last week, the University of Massachusetts hockey program got some good news and gained a good player Monday.

Jeff Teglia, a goalie who plays for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League, verbally committed to play for the Minutemen. The 19-year-old from Bloomingdale, Ill., will replace senior goaltender Dan Meyers on the UMass roster.

Teglia will likely back up Paul Dainton, who will be a senior next year, and have a chance to assume the No. 1 goalie job in 2011-12. He chose UMass over Yale, Michigan and Notre Dame.

Teglia is 28-10-5 so for the Lancers this season with a league-leading .919 save percentage to go with a 2.34 goals against average, which is fourth in the league. He was the starting goalie for the West Division in the 2010 USHL All-Star game.

Last year Teglia earned the USHL scholar-athlete award for success on the ice and in the classroom.

The USHL has been fertile recruiting ground for the Minutemen. Three other USHL players - Indiana Ice forward John Parker, Sioux Falls Stampede defenseman Conor Allen, and Lincoln Stars forward Chris DelMauro - have committed to UMass, which featured 11 USHL products on its roster in 2009-10.

Teglia joins Steven Guzzo among recent recruits. The 6-foot, 190-pound forward from Oakville, Ontario, had 29 goals and 41 assists in 56 games this season for the Oakville Blades in the Ontario Junior A League.

ALL-DECADE - Former UMass defenseman Thomas Pock was named to the 21-member Hockey East All-Decade Team that was announced Friday.

Boston College led all schools with seven players.

Forward James Marcou, who last week signed with the San Jose Sharks, was voted by fans as the all-decade favorite Minuteman.
