Minutewomen win two softball games
University of Massachusetts sophomore pitcher Sara Plourde struck out 31 batters as the Minutewomen swept two games at the San Diego Classic on Friday.
She fanned 14 in the first game, a 5-0 win over Illinois-Chicago, and then whiffed 17 in a 3-1 victory over San Diego as UMass improved to 14-5.
Plourde gave up one run and nine hits combined in the two games and walked six.
In the first game, the Minutewomen scored five times in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a three-run double by pinch-hitter Audrey Boutin. Whitney Williams and Jessica Serio also had RBIs for UMass.
Plourde struck out the side in the seventh to seal the win.
The offensive momentum carried over into the second game as the Minutewomen scored twice in the first on a two-run double by Michelle Libby. They added an insurance run in the six on an RBI-single by Serio, before Plourde again struck out the side in the seventh.
In Thursday's late game, UMass lost to San Diego State, 2-1.
Libby drove in Kyllie Magill with a sixth-inning single for the Minutewomen's only run .
Plourde took the loss, allowing one earned run on four hits and walk while striking out nine in six innings.
UMass concludes its weekend in San Diego with games against Texas A&M at noon and Oregon State at 7:30 on Saturday, and Long Beach State at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
