Suspect in Northampton vandalism spree to appear in court today
NORTHAMPTON - A man police said is responsible for smashing numerous car and business windows downtown Wednesday evening was to be arraigned this morning in Northampton District Court.
Anthony Rodriguez Sellez, 22, whose address was listed as the Interfaith Emergency Cot Shelter, 43 Center St., was arrested about 5 p.m. on numerous charges.
They include: shoplifting, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, trespassing on railroad tracks, assault and battery on a police officer, three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of malicious damage to property over $250 and five counts of malicious damage to a motor vehicle.
Police said Sellez stole a can of beer and kicked a glass door at Pop's Package Store. He went on to use a skateboard to smash a window at the Collector Galleries and windows of five cars parked outside Paradise City Tavern, police said. Each of the businesses is located at the intersection of Bridge, Hawley, Main and Market streets.
Officers used pepper spray to subdue Sellez as he walked on the railroad tracks behind Union Station off Strong Avenue, police said. Sellez put up a struggle, police said, striking three officers with his skateboard and also spitting on one.
He was subsequently strapped to a gurney and taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital for treatment.
