UMass to hold meeting on handling of alleged rape case

AMHERST - The University of Massachusetts will hold a campus meeting tonight to address the handling of an alleged sexual assault on campus that has drawn criticism from the community.

According to recent media reports, a UMass graduate was raped on campus last fall by a UMass student who confessed to the assault. The student, who has not been named due to federal student privacy laws, was given a deferred suspension by UMass administrators, a punishment has drawn criticism.

A deferred suspension is similar to probation in the sense that the suspension would be imposed if he committed another violation of campus rules.

Edward F. Blaguszewski, director of news and information at UMass, has acknowledged that in this instance, the sanction system did not work the way it should and changes have been made.

Tonight's meeting will take place 5-6 p.m. today in Campus Center room 101, according to the Daily Collegian. Blaguszewski confirmed a meeting tonight.
