Amherst boys eighth in state Nordic

The Amherst Regional boys Nordic ski team finished in eighth place and the girls placed 11th in the state championship meet Tuesday at the Notchview Reservation in Windsor.

Fifteen schools competed on the 7-kilometer course.

Lincoln-Sudbury won the boys state title with 30 points, and the Hurricanes finished with 144.

Mount Greylock won the girls title with 25 points, and Amherst had 217.

Paul Quackenbush was the top Hurricane boy, finishing 14th out of 110 skiers with a time of 25 minutes, 39 seconds.

Isaac Hoenig of Lincoln-Sudbury won the boys championship in 22:38.

"It was tricky conditions," Amherst coach Nat Woodruff said. "The conditions changed a lot from when the girls went out in the morning to when the boys went out in the afternoon."

The Hurricane girls were led by Theresa Piela who placed 45th of 109 skiers in 33:21.

Corey Stock of Lincoln-Sudbury won the girls title in 23:31.

"They have done phenomenally well," Woodruff said of his team's progress in its second year of competition.
