Plourde strikes out 18 in no-hitter
A no-hitter by Sara Plourde in which she tied the University of Massachusetts strikeout record was the only win for the 20th-ranked Minutewomen on Saturday and Sunday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.
Plourde shut out Illinois State 1-0 on Saturday.
UMass (6-4) lost 2-1 to No. 6 Missouri on Saturday, and 14-0 to No,. 18 Louisiana on Sunday.
Plourde struck out 18 Redbirds in her second career no-hitter. That matched the school record set three times by Danielle Henderson in 1997, 1998 and 199.
Plourde allowed four walks and one hit batter.
The Minutewomen scored the only run in the sixth inning when Meghan Carta doubled with one out and was replaced by pinch runner Jill Andrews who scored on a single by Jordan Storro. It was Storro's first career hit in her first start in left field for UMass.
Earlier Saturday, the Tigers scored twice in the fifth to erase a 1-0 Minutewoman lead.
Audrey Boutin drove in the UMass run with a single in the top of the fourth.
Plourde allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six.
On Sunday, the 18th-ranked Ragin Cajuns scored 13 runs in the top of the fourth inning.
The Minutewomen were held to three hits.
Plourde took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out seven in 3-1/3 innings. Bailey Sanders gave up four runs (all unearned) on five hits and a walk in 1-2/3 innings.
UMass next weekend plays at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., beginning at 12:30 p.m. Friday against Tennessee-Chattanooga.
