Sabis too strong for Belchertown
SPRINGFIELD - The Belchertown boys basketball team had to play a perfect game Friday night in Springfield if it hoped to advance past top-seeded Sabis in the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament quarterfinals.
That did not happen and the Bulldogs (20-2) got easy baskets in transition all night and ran past the Orioles 87-55.
"We settled for one pass and shot, which is fine when guys are hitting shots. But today guys weren't hitting shots," Belchertown coach Claude Humphrey said. "When there is long rebounds you have to get back on defense and we just didn't do that."
With the victory, Sabis advances to the Curry Hicks Cage to play either Hampshire Regional or Drury in its first Western Massachusetts Division 2 semifinal game on at 7:45 p.m. Thursday. The Red Raiders and Blue Devils play their quarterfinal game at 4 p.m. Sunday in Westhampton.
The Bulldogs are the defending Western Massachusetts Division 3 champion and lost in last year's state final to Watertown.
Sabis jumped out on Belchertown early in the first quarter but the Orioles (16-6) responded and trailed just 17-14 after one. Nate Conner scored nine points in the first for Belchertown.
A Pat Gooden basket at the start of the second quarter cut the lead to one, but that's as close as the Orioles got as the Bulldogs outscored Belchertown 25-10 during the final seven minutes to take a 42-26 lead into halftime.
Humphrey said he wasn't surprised by anything Sabis did.
"We knew they were going to press us. Their pressure hurt us and we knew that they would hit the boards hard," the first-year coach said.
The Bulldogs forced 19 turnovers with many of them translating into easy buckets for their two career 1,000-point scorers, Kamali Bey and Andre King.
Despite sitting out the final seven minutes of the game, Bey scored a game-high 29 points. King, who was a major part of the Sabis defensive pressure, scored 24, including a couple of NBA-range 3-pointers.
"We were slacking on defense, and we turned the ball over way too much," Belchertown's lone senior Dylan Bachand said. "They probably had at least 25 fast-break points and you can't do that it in the tournament. You have to limit the turnovers and we didn't do that tonight. We didn't execute."
Gooden finished with 13 points, and Conner battled his way to 18 for the Orioles.
"I felt like we could have went inside a little bit more to get some easy layups and see the ball go through the hoop, and build off of that," Humphrey said. "But we just didn't do that."
The second half was similar to the second quarter as the Bulldogs used relentless pressure to increase their lead to 72-39 heading into the fourth, ending any hope the Orioles had for a comeback.
While the loss marks a disappointing end to the Orioles' season, Belchertown did pick up its first tournament win since 1999 on Tuesday with a 58-38 defeat of Palmer.
"Before the season we had a goal. We wanted to make the tournament and get a tournament win. We did that. That was a success, but I also don't want to settle," Humphrey said. "And I hope they don't want to settle."
The Orioles return a strong nucleus of players with only Bachand graduating. He scored eight points in his final game for the Orioles.
