Cunningham leads Amherst with 34

Sean Cunningham's career night capped the Amherst Regional boys basketball team's terrific run to the end of the regular season with a 74-71 win at East Longmeadow.

Cunningham scored 34 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists for the Hurricanes (11-9, 5-3 Suburban), who finished tied with the Spartans (16-4, 5-3 Suburban) for second in the league.

Amherst trailed 16-11 in the first quarter, but opened up a double-digit lead in the second and never trailed again.

East Longmeadow cut the deficit to one with 25 seconds left, but free throws by Charles White (nine points) and Cunningham sealed the win, the team's seventh of its last eight and sixth straight on the road.

"The team is starting to believe in what we've been trying to do. They are seeing that we're having some success with it and now they're buying into it more and more," said Hurricanes coach Jim Matuszko, whose team finished 3-17 last year. "They are taking it personal on defense now."

Will Hird added 12 points for Amherst, while Ben Brassord (six points) and Mike Jeneralczuk (two points) had six rebounds each.
