Belchertown can't knock off Palmer
The Belchertown girls basketball hopes the third time will be a charm when it comes to Palmer.
The Orioles played the Panthers tough once again but could not hand them their first loss of the season, falling 49-41 in Palmer Tuesday.
It was the final regular-season game for both teams, which will play in the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament. Seeds will be announced Saturday at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
"To play Palmer you have to match their physicality because they pound you. And we're pretty physical," Orioles coach Jay Woodcock said. "We hoping for a third matchup."
Belchertown (13-7, 5-3 Bi-County East) cut an 11-point halftime deficit to four in the third quarter, but that's as close as the Orioles got despite multiple chances to get it down to two.
Brianna DelValle had 13 points and 18 rebounds for Belchertown, and Britiany Browning added 11 points.
The Orioles lost to the Panthers 33-31 on Jan. 4. Quaboag was the only other team to finish within single digits of Palmer, losing 42-41 at the Spalding Hoophall Classic.
Katrina Caulfield had 18 points to pace the Panthers who finished the regular season 20-0 (8-0 Bi-County East)..
Holyoke Catholic 60, Southwick 31 - Annie Broda and Sarah Dingee each scored 18 points as the Gaels cruised on the road.
Broda shot 4-for-7 from the field and was 8-for-11 at the free throw line.
Dingee scored three consecutive baskets in the third quarter to break open a tight game. The Gaels led 23-16 at halftime.
Kaitlyn Veit had nine points for Holyoke Catholic, and added five assists and seven steals. She had four assists and four steals in the second half alone.
Southwick (2-18, 0-8) finished its season.
Holyoke Catholic (10-9, 7-0 Bi-County West) can clinch the league title outright with a victory over McCann Tech (12-7, 6-1 Bi-County West) tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Holyoke Community College.
Amherst Regional 77, Chicopee 26 - The Hurricanes continued their dominance of the Suburban League as they cruised to their 19th consecutive victory in Chicopee.
Amherst will play for a perfect regular season on senior night Thursday when it hosts Chicopee Comp.
Mariah Lesure and Alyssa Leonard led the Hurricanes with 15 and 18 points, respectively. Brianna Leonard added 12 points for Amherst.
Pioneer Regional 50, Easthampton 42 - The Eagles led 33-31 but were outscored 19-9 in the fourth quarter as they fell in Northfield.
Elizabeth Whitney scored 16 points for Easthampton (7-13, 7-11 Franklin South), which concluded its season by dropping its ninth game by 13 points or less.
Alyssa Reardon added eight points for the Eagles.
Easthampton seniors Alicia Carter, Melissa Hurley, Julia Volpe and Reardon played their final high school games.
Boys basketball
Pathfinder 62, Gateway 59- The Gators (6-13) trailed by three with 0.8 seconds to go and had the ball under the Pioneers' basket but could not get off a shot and lost on the road.
Trevor Hamel scored 16 points, J.J. Edinger had 12 and Jeremy Tanguay chipped in with 14 for Gateway.
The Gators trailed by two In the final minute and forced a turnover but they could not score and were forced to foul. Pathfinder made one free throw to push the lead to three.
Gateway will close its season at Pioneer Christian at 7 tonight. The Gators won the first game between the teams 64-50 on Jan. 8.
