Amherst improves to 17-0
The Amherst Regional girls basketball team is less than one week from possibly finishing 20-0 in the regular season.
The Hurricanes shut out Longmeadow in the first quarter of Friday's contest en route to a 68-21 victory to imrpove to 17-0 (7-0 Suburban) on the year.
Amherst led 17-0 after the first quarter and 29-8 at halftime in the victory at home.
"I thought we came out with a lot of defensive intensity," said Amherst fourth-year coach Christal Murphy, whose team allowed just six Longmeadow field goals for the entire game. "We played hard from the start."
Alyssa Leonard led all scorers with 14 points, while Jenna Klaes added 12.
Kristen Ferola finished with nine, while Nicole DeMarchena scored six points to go with 11 rebounds.
Amherst has three games next week. It plays at Westfield on Monday, at Chicopee on Tuesday and then hosts Chicopee Comp on Thursday to wrap up the regular season.
Smith Academy 48, Mahar Regional 30 - Sarah Wickles scored a season-high 11 points as the Falcons (17-2, 16-1 Franklin South) extended their winning streak to nine with the victory in Orange.
Lindsay Gondek also scored 11 points, while Abeni Davies finished with nine points, five rebounds and four blocks.
The Falcons are tied for first place with Frontier Regional (17-2, 16-1 Franklin South) going into the final game of the season for both. Smith hosts Hopkins Academy on Tuesday night.
Frontier Regional 36, Pioneer Regional 33- Up by one point with under a minute to go, senior Lacie Judge came through in the clutch hitting two key free throws to seal the Red Hawks victory over the Panthers at home.
Melanie Stier led Frontier (17-2, 16-1 Franklin South) with 11 points, and Kristin Calvo added nine for the Red Hawks, who are tied for first place with Smith Academy in the Franklin South.
Frontier was outscored by Pioneer (7-11, 6-10 Franklin North) 14-7 in the fourth quarter, but still managed to hang on for the win.
The Red Hawks will play their final game of the regular season Tuesday night against Athol.
Hopkins Academy 55, Turners Falls 14 - Seventh-grader Kate Sullivan nearly outscored the entire Indians team with a game-high 13 points as the Golden Hawks (14-4, 13-4 Franklin South) won on the road.
Freshman Olivia Mathieu added 12 points, while senior Stephanie Delue finished with nine.
Lisa Berg had two points and 11 rebounds in the win, which is Hopkins' sixth in a row.
Minnechaug 42, Northampton 34 - Junior Lauren Weston led the Blue Devils with 11 points, but it wasn't enough for Northampton, as they fell to the Falcons at home.
After a back and forth game for three quarters, Northampton (6-13, 1-10 Valley Wheel) held a one point lead heading into the fourth.
However, poor free throw shooting down the stretch plagued the Blue Devils, who were outscored 19-12 by Minnechaug (8-10, 4-6 Valley Wheel) in the final quarter.
Freshman Susan Bell scored eight points, including two 3-pointers, for Northampton.
Cathedral 61, Hampshire Regional 47 - The Red Raiders suffered their third straight loss to end the regular season 12-8 overall (3-5 Bi-County East).
Ashlee Moussette had 14 points and five assists, while Margo McCarthy and Sarah Kober added eight points each.
Kober had 11 rebounds, giving her 205 total for the season.
Monson 68, South Hadley 23 - The Tigers (8-12, 2-6 Bi-County Central) trailed by just four points after the first quarter, but struggled offensively the rest of the way in the loss on the road.
Megan Lynes scored a team-high 11 points in the final game of the season for South Hadley, which doesn't have a senior on its roster.
Athol 41, Easthampton 33 - Eagles freshman forward Elizabeth Whitney's 12-point, 20-rebound performance wasn't enough on the road.
Annaka Rodriguez added eight points in the loss for Easthampton (7-12, 7-10 Franklin South), which has lost four straight.
Monument Mountain 48, Belchertown 41 - Junior forward Brianna DelValle's career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds wasn't enough for the Orioles, who fell to the Spartans in a battle of Division 2 playoff-bound teams.
Monument Mountain (14-4) hit seven 3-pointers en route to the win.
Olivia Pare had a solid game for the Orioles (12-6), scoring eight points in the loss.
Pathfinder 44, Gateway Regional 40 - Sophomore Chelsea Merritt scored 10 points, but it wasn't enough to keep the Gators (14-2, 13-1 Tri-County) from their first league loss in Thorndike.
Becca D'Astous added seven points for Gateway, which had won 13 straight heading into the game.
Franklin Tech 36, Smith Vocational 12 - The loss marked the final game for Vikings (3-13, 3-13 Tri-County) seniors Taylor Aubin, Amber Riopelle and Emma Byrom.
Boys basketball
Amherst Regional 65, West Springfield 55 - The Hurricanes ran their winning streak to five games - all on the road - and improved to 9-8 overall with the win.
"We have a tendency to play better away from home," coach Jim Matuszko said. "We get together earlier and we have a chance to bond and talk. It's just us when we are there. There are no other distractions."
Sean Cunningham scored 18 points, while Charles White added 16 for Amherst, which needs one win in its final three games to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2006.
Amherst returns home Monday night to host rival Northampton.
Palmer 66, Gateway Regional 30 - Gabe Craig scored 10 points, but the Gators (6-11) were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss on the road.
Austin Cook had four points and eight rebounds in the loss.
St. Mary 71, Holyoke Catholic 61#- Nick Bryda scored 28 points, including six 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough for the Gaels.
St. Mary (6-13) pulled off the upset against Holyoke Catholic (11-8) at home on senior night by playing stingy defense and out-rebounding the playoff-bound Gaels by 11.
Nathan Powers added 24 points, but the Gaels offense was flat in the second half as they couldn't find a third scoring option.
Belchertown 5, Greenfield 1 - Jon Martins and Ethan Auffrey each had one goal and one assist as the Orioles (10-5-3, 4-2-2 Fay) earned the win at the Mullins Center practice rink.
Matt Thornton, Matt Henry and Adam Messer added the other goals. Messer's tally was the first of his career.
Keenan Bell (two) Chris Lamoureux, Luke Caney and Bobby Fitzpatrick all had assists in the win.
Phil Ashley had 17 saves in goal for Belchertown.
The loss eliminated the Green Wave (3-10-2, 0-5-2) from the postseason.
