'Canes, Devils ousted in wrestling tourney

WESTFIELD - After a solid showing against Ludlow, the Amherst Regional wrestling team advanced to the second round in the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Team Wrestling Tournament on Saturday before falling to second-seeded West Springfield.

The No. 7 Hurricanes fell to the Terriers 39-18 after a slew of quick pins.

"You always hope for the best, but West Springfield's a tough team," Amherst coach Kelly Olanyk said. "We had marked improvement from when we wrestled them in the regular season, (but) they're No. 2 in this tournament."

The Terriers went on to lose 34-22 to top-seeded Central in the final at Westfield High School.

Amherst did take three wins in its match with West Springfield, as Nate Kane pinned Jose Flores in the 135-pound class, Mike Kane dominated Sean Riley, 7-0, at 145, and Ben Robinson had a 4-2 victory over Slav Pisarenko at 171.

The Terriers won five matches (112, 119, 125, 160 and 189), all by pin.

The Hurricanes advanced after defeating the Lions 21-17 in the first round. Ludlow had enough wrestlers to compete in only four matches, winning two (at 119 and 125).

Both Kanes won for Amherst, with Nate beating Jared Dias 12-5, and Mike defeating Niko Gasparini 4-3.

In another first-round match, No. 8 Northampton fell to No. 9 Westfield 48-33. The Blue Devils had only eight wrestlers, and won five of those matches.

Four of Northampton's victories came via pin: Jake Intrator took down Dylan Theodorakis at 112 pounds, Tim Callahan overpowered Tyler Sicard at 130, Elvin Rodriguez defeated Kyle Nutting at 135 and Will Hannon beat Jack Templeton at 145.

A.J. Chatterton also won for the Blue Devils, defeating Steve Auyeung 3-0 at 160.

Besides forfeits, the Bombers' other three wins were by pin. Kyle Best beat Kyle Cote-Houghton at 152, Carl Favata took down Alex Smith-Bove at 171 and Harrison Sabatino finished Bret Casella at 215.

"All the guys that won have been together for three years," said Northampton coach Brian Bagdon. "We have some guys who are above average, and the rest are newcomers and young kids. Match for match, it was what we expected."

Both the Hurricanes and Blue Devils entered the team tournament looking for more experience and a final tune-up before the western Massachusetts individual championships next Saturday at Springfield Cathedral.

Amherst will be led by its "Fabulous Four," as Olanyk calls them: Mike Kane, Robinson, Jeremy Salwen (152) and Danny Schrader (160).

"We lucked out with Ludlow # at 145, we saw one of the only divisional opponents (Gasparini) that our 145 hadn't seen," Olanyk said. "We're hoping to see more guys that we haven't seen, just so our guys will know where they stand and how they need to improve."

Intrator and Rodriguez are expected to be Northampton's top wrestlers in the individual tournament.

"Intrator should be seeded, and with an upset, could make the finals," Bagdon said. "Elvin, if he catches guys with his moves, he could be really successful,"

Competing in the team tournament is "beautiful because we haven't seen Ludlow all year, so we get to see the kids. We get to see Central. My guys get to see what these squads look like."
