Oriole wrestlers stopped in semis

PITTSFIELD - The Belchertown wrestling team did not have enough healthy competitors Saturday at the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Team Wrestling Tournament.

With one of their top wrestlers, Jacob Maheu, out with a cut hand, and another, 189-pounder Andrew Whitehead, sick with the flu, the second-seeded Orioles advanced to the semifinals, but no further.

After edging its first two opponents thanks to victories in the final match, Belchertown fell to No. 6 Southwick in the semifinals and then to No. 4 Athol in the third-place match at Taconic High School.

Top-seeded Mount Greylock won the championship for the second consecutive year, beating the Rams 45-27 in the final.

Belchertown earned a 40-36 win over Taconic and then needed a tiebreaker to get past Frontier in the quarterfinals of the 18-team dual meet tournament.

Whitehead was the epitome of Belchertown's effort.

Already wrestling a class above his normal weight to help the Orioles fill spots, Whitehead had to pause during his match with Luis Ramirez of the Braves to get sick in a yellow bucket by the mats, went on to win, and then proceeded to get sick again afterward.

"There's no calling in sick for us," Whitehead said. "I was told if I win, we win. I just went in and gutted it out. I was wrestling up 30 pounds and I came in sick. I threw up during the match, then again after."

Injuries limited Belchertown to just 13 wrestlers in attendance, meaning the Orioles were starting every match with at least one forfeit.

"I left it up to him," Belchertown coach Darren Burkey said of Whitehead. "If he thinks he can go, I'll let him go. If he says he can't, I'm not going to make him."

Both of the Orioles' victories came down to the final match, with the result in Mike Dull's sizable hands. The 270-pound senior won both by pin.

Dull said he was confident, despite the fact that he'd never faced Nick Martin of Frontier.

"Sometimes it's like, #Oh God, that's a lot of pressure," Dull said. "But a lot of the times I wrestle better in that situation."

After its first two rounds, Belchertown was hindered by a lack of wrestlers.

"Our problem lies in the fact that we don't have a lot of flexibility," Burkey said.

In the two wins, Belchertown's top duo of Dan Leary (140) and Dustin Gregoire (152) both had a pair of victories. Leary won twice by forfeit, and Gregoire won by a forfeit and a pin.

Gregoire also earned a win against Athol, one of three pins by the Orioles in the third-place match along with Zack O'Donnell (103) and Jared Lauziere (135). Jake Cote won a decision for Belchertown at 130 pounds.

Neither Leary nor Whitehead wrestled in the 59-21 third-place loss to Athol.

"I'm happy with how we did," Whitehead said. "It was good prep for western Mass. (individuals). We got to see some guys we'll see next week."

The western Massachusetts individual championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Pioneer Regional.

In the team tournament, No. 3 Granby and No. 7 Frontier both made it to the quarterfinals before losing.

Granby lost 40-36 to eventual runner-up Southwick, while the Red Hawks fell to the Orioles by the same score.

No. 9 Hampshire Regional, No. 13 South Hadley and No. 18 Gateway Regional and all lost their first matches.

The Red Raiders and Gators rebounded with consolation-round wins, while the Tigers went 0-2 for the day.
