Vikings, Gators pick up victories

Smith Vocational 35, St. Mary 32 - Sophomore Meghan Shain and senior Taylor Aubin combined for four key free throws in the closing minutes as the Vikings (3-9, 3-9 Tri-County) earned the win at home.

The win avenged a 35-20 loss to the Saints (2-12, 2-8 Tri-County) on Jan. 4, which snapped a 60-game losing streak for St. Mary.

"The difference this time was that we broke the press in the first half," coach Glenn Doulette said. "Last time, we couldn't get it over half court. We prepared for it all week in practice and they were flawless. They were awesome."

Shain continued her recent strong play with nine points and is averaging 11.7 points in the team's last three games.

Aubin also scored nine points in the win, which was the third for Smith Vocational in its last six games after an 0-6 start.

Gateway Regional 45, Franklin Tech 34 - The first-place Gators (13-1, 12-0) continued their dominance of the Tri-County League with the win over the second-place Eagles (9-6, 9-4) in Turners Falls.

Chelsea Merritt scored a team-high eight points for Gateway, and Paige Fairman added seven and keyed a strong defensive effort.
