Frontier dominates Easthampton

The Frontier Regional boys basketball team had an answer to one of their worst performances under coach Marty Sanderson - beat Easthampton.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a huge lead and maintained it in the second half en route to a 66-32 victory over the Eagles in South Deerfield on Thursday.

"Our intensity and passion is what carried us," Sanderson said. "Coming off our last game, it was a different team. They worked hard. The defense was solid. We got it done offensively. It wasn't pretty but we found a way."

Frontier (9-6, 9-5 Hampshire West) scored a season-low in points during Monday's 69-21 loss to Mahar.

Easthampton (15-3, 13-2 Hampshire East) on Thursday played its third game this week and second in as many days. Easthampton beat Hampshire Regional 53-51 on Wednesday.

"We were a step behind but they played unbelievable. We were struggling," Eagles coach Brian Miller said. "I'm sure (Wednesday's game) was a factor but it's not an excuse. They deserved to win tonight."

Frontier jumped out to a 30-9 halftime lead and led 43-17 entering the fourth. Easthampton, which had huge comebacks in wins over Smith Academy on Jan. 21 and Hampshire, could not close the gap this time.

"They came out at us in the second half and created turnovers," said Sanderson, whose team had 23 turnovers. "But we were also able to get easy baskets when we didn't turn it over."

Matt Chamberlin had 24 points and 15 rebounds for Frontier, and Justin Mieczkowski had 10 points and four assists.

Jaren Lutenegger and Kyle Bryant each had eight points for the Red Hawks.

Casey White led the Eagles with 13 points while Brendan Rios was held to six points on two 3-pointers.

Rios, who eventually fouled out, played about half the game due to foul trouble. The six points snapped a string of 24 straight games in double figures.

The 32 points for the Eagles were 28 below their season average.

Frontier moved within a win of qualifying for the postseason.

Northampton 66, Westfield 62 - The Blue Devils (14-4, 4-2 Suburban) led by 12 at halftime and held on in the second half as they won in Westfield.

Ellis Cooper had 19 points and 13 rebounds for Northampton, and Jesse Coulon added 17 points.

Jake Laga chipped in with 11 points for the Blue Devils, and Jake Konowitch had six points and seven rebounds.

Hamp did a great job defensively on Alex Garstka (21 points). The junior scored eight points late in the third quarter and added eight more in the fourth.

The Bombers (9-7, 1-4) have lost six of their last seven.

Amherst Regional 66, Longmeadow 57 - The road continued to be friendly to the Hurricanes (7-8, 3-2 Suburban), who played their third game - all wins - of six straight away from Amherst.

Sean Cunningham scored a team-high 20 points for the Hurricanes, which had lost four straight at home before the long string of road games began.

Charles White finished with 12 points for Amherst, and Ben Brassord added 10.

Smith Academy 72, Mohawk Trail 62 - The Falcons outscored the Warriors 49-22 in the odd quarters, which was enough to overcome Mohawk's 40-23 edge in the even quarters, as Smith won in Buckland.

Joey O'Connell had 19 points and seven rebounds, and Mat Sulda added 11 points, six steals, six rebounds and four assists for the Falcons (7-9, 7-8 Hampshire West).

Anthony Afflitto scored 20 points for Smith, and Chris Sulda added 14.

Mohawk (2-14, 1-14 Hampshire East) used three straight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and nine points by Matt Zalenski (21 points) to cut a 59-38 deficit to 10.

The Falcons went 30-for-42 from the free throw line compared to Mohawk's 2-for-5 effort.

Belchertown 72, Palmer 56 - Pat Gooden scored 18 of his game-high 35 points in the first quarter and the Orioles (12-5, 3-2 Bi-County North) rolled to the win at home.

Gooden, who entered the game averaging 19.3 points per game, made three 3-pointers in the opening frame as Belchertown opened up a 30-17 lead. He finished with four 3-pointers and came within four points of his career high of 39, which he set on Dec. 21 against Ware.

Nate Conner added 15 points for the Orioles.

Jon Remillard led the Panthers (10-6, 4-2 Bi-County North) with 21 points.

South Hadley 55, Agawam 53 - The Tigers (4-11, 2-3 Central) used a balanced scoring attack to earn the win at home.

Brian Chieco led South Hadley with 15 points, followed closely by Zach Garbacik and Roberto Agrait, who had 14 points each.

Greenfield 49, Hopkins Academy 47 - Dan Sullivan led all scorers with 13 points for the Golden Hawks, but it was the Green Wave (7-10, 5-10 Hampshire East) who earned the win in a battle of teams on the playoff bubble.

Denzel Coleman added eight points for Hopkins (7-9, 6-8 Hampshire West).

Dean Tech 75, Smith Vocational 56 - Kieffer Staples had 18 points and Andy Blair added 15 but it was not enough as the Vikings (1-13, 1-10 Tri-County) lost in Holyoke.

Scott Matusiewicz chipped in 11 points for Smith.

Nelson Falcon led Dean (14-2, 9-2) with 25 points, and Josue Figueroa had 17 points.
