South Hadley fights off elimination
The South Hadley boys basketball team avoided being eliminated from postseason contention for the first time in over a decade Tuesday night, but they are far from a berth in the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament.
The Tigers defeated Holyoke Catholic 62-51 and now must win their last three games against non-Division 1 opponents (New Leadership, Sabis, Pathfinder) to qualify via the 70 percent rule. South Hadley plays a majority of its games against Division 1 opponents.
Roberto Agrait led the Tigers (4-10) with 24 points, including 15 free throws, and Zach Garbacik had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Nick Bryda led the Gaels (10-6) with 22 points, and Nate Powers added 10.
Smith Vocational 64, Pathfinder 44 - Andy Blair made five 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Vikings (1-12, 1-9 Tri-County) used a their long-range shooting to sink the Pioneers in Northampton and pick up their first victory of the season at home.
Blair knocked down eight 3-pointers en-route to a game-high 25 points.
Smith led by 14 at the half, before Pathfinder cut its deficit to four heading into the final quarter. But timely shooting by Blair and Kieffer Staples (15 points) helped Smith hold on for the win. Staples also dished out eight assists.
Tony Sicard controlled the paint and finished with 20 rebounds for the Vikings.
Ice hockey
Holyoke 7, Greenfield 1 - The Purple Knights scored seven goals at Fitzpatrick Arena to mark their seventh straight win.
Chris Menard had two goals and three assists to lead Holyoke (13-1-1).
Brian Rokowski added two goals and two assists for the Knights, and Derek Pinciak (goal, two assists), Luke Dilisio (goal, assist), Jake Bailly (goal, assist) and Cody Miller (two assists) all had multiple points. Kevin Stefanik added an assist for Holyoke.
Tadd Goff made 22 saves in goal for the Knights.
Turners Falls 8, Central 2 - Kyle Platner scored three goals for the Indians (4-6-2, 4-4-0 Wright) who won at Smead Arena in Springfield.
Trevor Berman added two goals and an assist for Turners Falls, and Dakota Keller, Ryan Sullivan (assist) and Nick Gallerani each scored once.
Keegan Downie added two assists for the Indians.
Turners Falls goaltender Will Miller made 12 saves.
