Hopkins girls hoop team recovers
It took the Hopkins Academy girls basketball team two quarters to adjust to playing without injured point guard Emma Konieczny, but the Golden Hawks did enough to beat Athol 56-46 on the road Tuesday night.
The Golden Hawks (11-4, 10-4 Franklin South) outscored the Red Raiders 22-7 in the third quarter to turn a seven-point half-time deficit into an eight-point, fourth-quarter lead.
Stephanie Delue scored 15 points for Hopkins, while Olivia Mathieu added 13 points and Gabrielle Pelissier had 12.
Mathieu and Delue split time at point in place of Konieczny, who missed the game after injuring her ankle in practice.
The Red Raiders (9-7, 9-5 North) remain one win shy of the postseason.
Amherst 73, Chicopee 15 - The Hurricanes (15-0, 5-0 Suburban) held the Pacers (2-12, 0-4) to two points in each of the first and third quarters en route to the win at home.
Mariah Lesure had 10 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots for Amherst.
Alyssa Leonard scored a game-high 19 points while Kristen Ferola (11 points) and Jenna Klaes (10) also hit double figures for the Hurricanes.
Amherst had 13 steals.
Smith Academy 65, Turners Falls 21 - Alyssa Klepacki led four players in double figures with 14 points as the Falcons took a 16-1 lead after the first quarter en route to the win on the road.
Lindsay Gondek had 12 points, Steph Slysz had 11 and Abeni Davies (12 rebounds) added 10 for Smith Academy (14-2, 14-1 Franklin South).
Holyoke 55, Northampton 40 - Lauren Weston scored 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, but it was not enough for the Blue Devils (6-10, 1-7 Valley Wheel) to pull off the upset on the road.
After being tied at halftime, the Purple Knights used a strong second half and some key buckets by sophomore Monique Heard (20 points) to pull away.
"We just didn't sustain it long enough to get the job done," said Northampton coach Perry Messer.
Molly Ross scored eight points and Sam Barnes had six for the Blue Devils.
Easthampton 37, Greenfield 26 - The Eagles (7-8, 7-7 Franklin South) pulled away with a 10-2 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Alicia Carter led all scorers with 13 points for Easthampton, and Alyssa Reardon finished with nine.
Easthampton needs to go 3-2 in its final five games to earn a postseason berth.
Ware 46, Belchertown 39 - The Orioles (9-5) led 18-16 at halftime and held Justine King to six points but the senior scored 23 points in the second half as the Indians (12-4) pulled out the win in Belchertown.
Brianna DelValle had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Orioles, and Katherine Goodale added six points and eight rebounds.
Holyoke Catholic 55, Sci-Tech 22 - Kaitlyn Veit outscored the Cybercats 24-22 as the Gaels (7-8, 4-0 Bi-County West) won in Springfield.
Veit added 10 rebounds and seven assists.
Meghan Connolly had six points and four assists for Holyoke Catholic, and Caitlin Rooke had six points and 12 rebounds.
Cathedral 39, Granby 36 - Sophomore forward Alyssa Boardway matched a career high with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but the Rams (3-13) ran out of gas in Springfield.
Granby took a 24-15 lead into halftime, but lost both Brooke Labrie and Katie Goff to injuries and the already undermanned Rams could not hold off the Panthers (11-4).
The team's second-leading scorer, Amanda Lafleur, missed her fourth straight game with an ankle injury.
Gateway 39, Westfield Vocational 35 (OT) - The last-place team in the Tri-County League took the first-place team to overtime before the Gators put the Tigers away.
Gateway (12-1, 11-0) outscored Westfield Vocational (2-10, 1-9) 6-2 in overtime for the win in Huntington.
Emma Long scored a layup with 1:30 left to push the Gateway lead to three, and Jess Hopson added one free throw with 40 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Chelsea Merritt had 10 points for the Gators and Long added seven.
Chinelle Pieciak (12 points) hit a baseline jumper at the buzzer for the Tigers to force overtime.
Palmer 63, South Hadley 27 - The Tigers (7-9) struggled on the road and fell to the undefeated Panthers (16-0), who are 36-0 in the regular season since the beginning of the 2008-09 season.
Casey O'Connor had eight points for South Hadley.
New Leadership 37, Smith Vocational 22 - Despite 15 points by Megan Shain, the Vikings (2-9, 2-9 Tri-County) lost in Springfield.
