Busy week for Blue Devils' swimmers
The Northampton swimming teams are in the midst of a busy week.
With two meets already completed this week, the Blue Devils have one more Friday to complete an unusual trifecta.
On Monday Northampton competed in a double-dual meet with Wayland and Longmeadow. The boys beat Wayland and lost to the Lancers, while the girls beat Longmeadow but lost to the Warriors.
On Tuesday the boys (8-1) beat Westfield while the girls (5-4) fell to the Bombers.
And Friday they travel to East Longmeadow for a 4 p.m. meet.
"What makes it tricky is it's finals period for the swimmers," boys coach Steve Constantine said. "Focus is a problem but we're trying to get through the week. We're swimming well."
Northampton had finals scheduled on Wednesday and today.
"I don't know if it helps (having three meets) because you lose a training day but it has given the girls good focus this week," coach Jim Hirtle said. "They're stressed with exams."
HAMPSHIRE'S PINK ZONE - The Hampshire Regional girls basketball team hosts its second "Pink Zone" night, which will raise money for breast cancer awareness tonight.
Both the Red Raiders and visiting Granby will be wearing pink warm-up shirts that will read "Everyone Deserves A Lifetime."
Proceeds from the concessions and the 50/50 raffle will go to charity.
#CANES FOR THE CURE - On Monday and Feb. 2, the Amherst Regional boys and girls programs will host fundraisers for breast cancer research.
During lunch at school this week and next week, students can buy T-shirts to support the Cancer Care Fund at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. Those wearing the T-shirts will get into games (boys vs. East Longmeadow on Jan. 25, girls vs. Chicopee on Feb. 2) for free. The T-shirts are $8 at the school and $10 on game days.
There also will be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.
RETRO NIGHT AT FRONTIER - The Frontier Regional girls basketball team will host a "Retro Night" fundraiser during its game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Mohawk Trail.
That night, both the varsity and junior varsity teams will wear vintage 1980s uniforms as part of a fundraiser to benefit the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Springfield.
As part of the event, the players will sell fluorescent green retro T-shirts, there will be #80s music featured during warm-ups and halftime.
There will also be prizes awarded to the adult and students with the best #80s outfit.
All of the money raised will go directly to the hospital.
CLOSING IN ON MILESTONES - Nick Bryda of Holyoke Catholic is quickly closing in on 1,000 points for his career. The senior is 156 points shy of the milestone with nine regular-season games remaining. Bryda is averaging 23.7 points per game.
Branden Labrie of Hampshire Regional also has a chance to join the 1,000-point club. Labrie is 202 points away, also with nine regular-season games remaining. Labrie is averaging 26.1 points per game.
