WESTHAMPTON - Freeman "Scotty" Scott, 83, of Main Road, passed away on Jan. 13, 2010, surrounded by his loving family at the Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds.

Born in Northampton, he was the son of the late Maurice and Flora (Galpin) Scott. Scotty worked for 30 years at Kollmorgen Corp. in Northampton and retired in 1986 as an optical assembler. He had previously worked for Westhampton Sand and Gravel as a weigh master. He was a lifelong resident of Westhampton and a graduate of Northampton High School and Northampton Commercial College.

Scotty was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Pacific theater in Okinawa and the Korean peninsula during World War II. He was a member of Westhampton Congregational Church. He was a volunteer at Cooley Dickinson Hospital and a volunteer driver for the Westhampton Council on Aging.

He was active with the Westhampton Blacksmith Shop Museum and was on the Senior Housing Building Committee. He also served as the veterans' organizer for Memorial Day parades in Westhampton. Scotty enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping. He traveled to all 50 states and spent summers at his camp in Pittsburg, N.H. All who knew him enjoyed his ability to tell a good story.

He leaves his wife and best friend of 60 years, Eleanor (Corliss) Scott; two sons, Robert Scott and his wife Kathleen of South Deerfield and Richard Scott and his wife Janet of Pelham; two daughters, Christine Labrie and her husband Roger of Southampton and Susan Morton and her husband Thomas of Westhampton; and two sisters, Thelma Waterman and Eleanor Truehart, both of Easthampton. He had 12 grandchildren of whom he was very proud and was also blessed with six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 3 p.m. at Westhampton Congregational Church. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in the spring at Westhampton Center Cemetery. The Boucher-O'Brien Funeral Home is entrusted with his care. Donations in his memory may be made to the Friends of the Westhampton Memorial Library, 3 South Road, Westhampton, MA 01027.
