Minutewomen fall in A-10 opener

The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team was unable to convert two attempts at a game-winning shot in the final seconds and lost 58-57 to Rhode Island on Saturday in the Atlantic 10 opener at the Mullins Center.

Anisha Wilson hit a layup with 33 seconds left to give the Rams (8-8, 1-0 A-10) a 58-56 lead.

Jasmine Watson made one of two free throws for the Minutewomen (6-10, 0-1 A-10) who rebounded the missed shot but could not get the game-winning basket.

UMass led 28-26 at halftime and 52-44 with 7:59 to play in the game. However, a 12-2 run by Rhode Island gave the Rams a 56-54 lead.

Kristina Danella had her third career double-double for the Minutewomen, recording 16 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Watson added 13 points, five rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Diatiema Hill contributed 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists for UMass.

The Minutewomen play at Saint Louis at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
