James Matusko, had family locally
KITTY HAWK, N.C. - James H. Matusko, 55, passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, while commercial fishing on the beach in Southern Shores.
Born June 20, 1954, he was the son of retired Marine First Sgt. John G. Matusko of Kitty Hawk (formerly of Northampton, Mass.), and Leona Williams Cox of San Antonio.
Besides his parents, he is survived by and dearly missed by his son, Mario and Mario's wife, Jennifer, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Mario's mother, Angela Matusko; a brother, John G. Matusko Jr. of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and his loving companion and special friend, Nancy Mike of Kitty Hawk. Also left to cherish his memory are his three grandchildren, Justin, Kyle and Andrew of Jacksonville, Fla.
His grandmother, Mary Matusko, formerly of Williams Street in Northampton, predeceased him several years ago. James also leaves many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Northampton area.
James Matusko was also a U.S. Marine Corps retiree. He rose through the ranks from private to first sergeant and then to warrant officer (gunner). In his 28 years of service as a U.S. Marine, he had the opportunity to travel the world. During his career, he worked as a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C., and as an NROTC instructor at the University of Florida. He was the proud recipient of several medals and awards, including the Combat Action Ribbon for Service in the First Gulf War, Operation Desert Shield.
Mr. Matusko will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date to be announced by the family. Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, is assisting the family with arrangements. No local services are planned at this time.
