Tom McClung

Blistering bebop, sizzling salsa, down-home blues, pastoral folk, avant-garde jazz - versatile Amherst-born pianist/composer Tom McClung can handle them all with expertise, which keeps him in demand as a sideman and vocal accompanist in Europe where he currently lives. Among those who have called on McClung's talent over the years are Marion Brown, Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, Bobby McFerrin, Aaron Neville, James Cotton and Bo Diddley.

McClung also leads his own trio from his Paris home base, works with the Stephen McCraven ensemble known as Black Studies and is active as a freelancer in clubs and concerts throughout Europe. "I like mixing it up," he says, "juxtaposing the known and the unknown: Reflex, rhythm, instinct and imagination, combined with a knowledge and respect for tradition."

Returning to Amherst for his annual hometown solo holiday gig, McClung will perform Sunday afternoon at 3 at the First Congregational Church at 165 Main St. $10 at the door. 253-9597
