Labrie lifts Hampshire on buzzer-beater

The Hampshire Regional boys basketball team overcame a three-point deficit in the closing seconds to beat Holyoke Catholic 61-59 on Monday in Westhampton.

Alex Brunelle tied the game at 59-59 with a 3-pointer with six seconds left. Branden Labrie then stole the ball at half court and rushed in for a buzzer-beating layup to win the game for the Red Raiders (3-0, 3-0 Bi-County North).

Brunelle finished with a career-high 19 points to go with six assists. Labrie added 16 points, and Keith Cotnoir had 12, also a career-high.

Nate Powers scored 20 points for the Gaels (3-1, 3-1 Bi-County South), who overcame a 13-point halftime deficit with a barrage of second-half 3-pointers, including four by Michael Laflamme (12 points) to take a 51-44 lead with four minutes left.

Nick Bryda added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Holyoke Catholic.

Easthampton 72, Mohawk Regional 47 - A 16-6 first half set the tone as the Eagles took an early lead and controlled the game throughout.

Brendan Rios had his third game of 20 or more points with 26 to lead Easthampton (3-1, 2-0 Hampshire League). Casey White added 16 points and four steals.

Belchertown 74, Ware 54 - Pat Gooden exploded for a career-high 39 points as the Orioles (3-1, 3-1 Bi-County North) cruised at home.

Gooden, who played for Cathedral last season, drilled eight 3-pointers and made five free throws. The junior entered the game averaging 14.7 points per game.

"Our offense runs through Pat and he gets those shots every game," Belchertown coach Claude Humphrey said. "Today he hit them."

Dan Johnson added four points and six rebounds while Nate Conner added 12.

West Springfield 53, South Hadley 48 - The Tigers (1-2) led 13-12 after the first quarter before the Terriers (2-1) turned up the defensive pressure, took a 13-point lead at the end of three and held on for the win in West Springfield.

South Hadley, which could get no closer than four points in the final quarter, was led by Zach Garbacik with 15 points and Roberto Agrait with 11.

Gateway Regional 56, Granby 51 - Gabe Craig scored a game-high 16 points to go with five rebounds and three assists as the Gators (2-3, 1-3 Bi-County South) won in Huntington.

J.J. Edinger added 13 points for Gateway, while Trevor Hamel added 11.

Clinton Sapowsky scored 14 points to lead the Rams (1-2, 1-2 Bi-County North), and Zach Benoit finished with eight.

Amherst Regional 65, Commerce 38 - The Hurricanes jumped out to a 34-18 lead at halftime and rolled on the road.

Sean Cunningham led Amherst (1-2) with 23 points, while Ben Brassord had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Charles White added 12 points.

Lenox 55, Hopkins Academy 42 - The Golden Hawks (2-2) trailed 27-5 after the first quarter and never recovered in Lenox.

Scott Fournier led Hopkins with 10 points, while Karl Kapinos had nine.

Ice hockey

Amherst 8, Turners Falls 3 - Steffen Herter netted a hat trick and the Hurricanes (3-1) won at Orr Rink.

Chuck Hebb (one goal, two assists), Justin Satkowski (one goal, one assist), Corey Deres (three assists), Greg Mathieu (two assists) and Jeremy Lincoln (two assists) each had multiple-point performances for Amherst.

Erik LaMotte, Luke Allen and Ian Maloney each had one goal for the Hurricanes.

Amherst goaltender Alex McGeoch made 24 saves.

Kyle Platner scored twice for the Indians, and Ryan Sullivan had the other goal.

Dakota Keller and Keegan Downie each had one assist for Turners Falls (2-2-1).

Fran Palazzo made 46 saves for the Indians.
