State sets hearing in Holyoke on wood-burning power plants
BOSTON (AP) - Forestry and energy experts tapped by the state to study the pros and cons of wood burning power plants are planning to hold a public hearing this week.
State environmental officials asked for the review after residents said they were worried that wood burning power plants proposed for Russell, Greenfield, Springfield and Pittsfield could harm air quality.
The Massachusetts Medical Society is also opposing large scale wood burning power plants, saying they pose an unacceptable risk to public health.
Lawmakers are also weighing a bill that would ban the use of old construction and demolition debris at the plantsm while opponents are pushing a ballot question that would limit carbon dioxide emissions.
The hearing is scheduled Thursday in Holyoke.
