Tigers squeak into the postseason
South Hadley - The South Hadley football team waited until the last possible second on Thursday to qualify for the postseason.
Tigers quarterback Jason Bourque took a snap with one second left in the game, moved slightly to his right and found Matt Roy nearly out of bounds in the corner of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown that advanced South Hadley to the western Massachusetts Division 2 playoffs.
"That was about as close as I've been to being out of bounds and making the catch," said Roy. "Jay (Bourque) and I have been working together a lot, and we've put a of extra hours in. We're good friends, and we have good chemistry."
That was the second critical pass completed by Bourque in the final 15 seconds of the drive that gave the Tigers a 24-22 victory over Chicopee Comp in their Thanksgiving Day battle.
With the ball at the Colts' 41-yard line and 15 seconds remaining, Bourque eluded Sam Styckiewicz of Chicopee Comp and threw to Sean Bouthiller at the 8-yard line.
"I saw Jason rolling out, so I just went towards him where he could see me," said Bouthiller.
South Hadley called a time-out with five seconds remaining. Bourque's first attempt resulted in an incompletion, and the clock stopped with one second left, setting up the heroics on the game's final play.
Both teams will play in tournament semifinals Tuesday.
The Tigers (6-5, 5-3 Suburban), seeded fourth in Division 2, will play top-seeded Hoosac Valley (10-0) at 5 p.m. at Westfield State College.
The Colts (7-3, 5-3 Suburban) are seeded fourth in Division 1 and will face top-seeded Longmeadow (9-2) at 5 p.m. at Chicopee Comp.
On Thursday, the Colts took a short-lived 22-18 lead with 1:29 remaining in the game.
The drive started at the South Hadley 35-yard line with 2:53 to play after Ryan Gagne forced a short punt by South Hadley.
Chicopee Comp quarterback Jesse Warner (16-for-26) threw for his 350th yard and his second touchdown of the game on second down with a completion to Matt Toczek in the end zone.
While the Colts outgained the Tigers 350-72 in the air, South Hadley controlled the ground game. The Tigers finished with 239 rushing yards compared to minus-2 for Chicopee Comp.
The running game for South Hadley was particularly effective in the first half, as the offensive line dominated.
"This is the best game I've seen the offensive line play," said Roy.
"When your playing a team like Chicopee Comp everyone has to step up, but the offensive line stepped up huge," said Tigers coach Ray Ferro.
Bouthiller ran for two touchdowns in the first half, of 22 and 23 yards. "We're pretty confident when our line plays like that," said Bouthiller. "I feel like we can do anything with that line playing as good as they are."
Sean Mulveyhill also broke for a 30-yard touchdown run up the middle in the third quarter.
"Our defense today defended probably the best throw-and-catch combination I can remember," said Ferro. "Jesse Warner is just a phenomenal quarterback, he's got accuracy, he's got athleticism, and he's got the ammunition to throw it too. He has some great receivers."
South Hadley now has a 7-2 advantage in the Thanksgiving Day series. The Tigers also got wins in 2005, 2006 and 2008 when they needed them to qualify for the postseason.
Their next challenge this year is the undefeated Hurricanes.
"We don't know much about them," said Ferro. "We haven't played them. All we know is that they're good, but with a win like that, our team is pretty confident."
