Dancer's Junior Miss win keeps it in the family
NORTHAMPTON - Danielle Glenn said she felt relaxed as she performed her jazz routine to "Fame" - a song she chose for its upbeat nature and catchy tune - hours before she was named 2010 Greater Easthampton Junior Miss.
The second to perform out of 18 Junior Miss contestants, Glenn danced on, around and beside a school desk and chalkboard in her cheerleading uniform on the Northampton High School stage. At the conclusion of her talent piece, Glenn turned the chalkboard around to the song's lyrics "remember my name" and pointed to "Danielle," spelled out across the board.
Glenn's name indeed proved memorable to the judges, who awarded her in talent, scholastics and fitness categories, and gave her the 2010 Greater Easthampton Junior Miss title at the 44th annual show, which featured a New England sports theme.
"This is crazy," said Glenn, who was wearing her medallion and receiving hugs and congratulatory wishes after the show. "I'm very excited for the year ahead."
Glenn's older sisters, Ashley and Brittany, are former Greater Easthampton Junior Miss contestants. They cheered her on with their parents, Norman and Gail Glenn.
Ashley Glenn, 2003 Greater Easthampton Junior Miss, went on to become 2003 Massachusetts Junior Miss, and continued her pageantry experience as 2008 Miss Connecticut vying for the 2008 Miss America title. She said she offered her little sister a few words of advice before Sunday's show: Have fun and relax.
"I'm so proud of her," Ashley Glenn said as she waited for her sister to come out from backstage after the show. "She's wonderful under pressure. I could tell she was just being herself."
A dancer for 16 years at the Hackworth School of Performing Arts, Danielle Glenn is a senior at the private Williston Northampton School in Easthampton. She aspires to be a biomedical scientist.
Meanwhile, Michelle Turner was Greater Easthampton Junior Miss's first runner up with a $1,900 reward; Ashley Shattuck received $1,500 for second runner up; Lauren Desmond was named third runner up with a $1,200 prize; and Jessica Healy was awarded $1,000 for fourth runner up. Glenn went home with $4,100 for her Greater Easthampton Junior Miss title and $1,200 for category awards.
Four candidates received awards in each category this year instead of three. Contestants were evaluated in their speaking, presentation, performance in school, coordination and self assurance. Interview awards went to Michelle Rosseau, Samantha Brown, Shattuck and Fallon Lapan. Talent recognition was given to Shattuck, Brittany Turrell, Turner and Glenn. Acknowledged for scholastics were Brown, Kim Kruzel, Glenn and Rosseau. Fitness credits went to Kruzel, Healy, Turner and Glenn. Awarded for self expression were Healy, Turner, Desmond and Shattuck.
Non-judged awards include the "Arline Community Service Award" presented to Brown, the "Spirit of Junior Miss" title given to Christine Eliason, the "Be Your Best Self" recognition distributed to Marissa Mumblow, and the "Chaperone's Essay Award" received by Desmond.
The 2009 Greater Easthampton Junior Miss, Marissa Dombkowski, gave her farewell speech and performance to "Ease on Down the Road," a tap number she presented at the 2009 Massachusetts Junior Miss show in Franklin.
A public relations major at Hofstra University in Long Island, Dombkowski said "2009 has been the best year of my life and I owe it all to Junior Miss." She added the term "has been," given to past Greater Easthampton Junior Misses, should be changed to "always will be."
Meanwhile, Glenn will compete in the 2010 Massachusetts Junior Miss show in February. If she finishes first in the state, Glenn will travel to Mobile, Ala., to compete for the title of 2010 America Junior Miss.
After Sunday night's show, however, Glenn said her plan was to simply "relax" - a state of being she graciously carries on and off the stage.
