Gateway falls short in state final

WORCESTER - "GSR", the long-time cheer that means Gateway Soccer Rules, was everywhere this postseason.

It could be found on signs at games, written on the bus and even shaved into girls soccer coach Steve Estelle's head.

And while the Gators ruled western and central Massachusetts in the tournament, it was Millis that ruled Saturday's state Division 3 championship game at Foley Stadium in Worcester.

The Mohawks (16-2-6) scored in the fourth minute and never let up en route to a 2-0 win for the title.

"I don't know what it was. We just didn't bring our game," Gateway senior cocaptain Kirsten Huff said. "The game that we played today was not the way we usually play. But we made it this far, so we should be happy."

Gateway (15-4-2), which had allowed just one goal in four previous tournament games, gave up two in the first 13 minutes, 16 seconds of Saturday's contest.

Millis got on the board with 36:23 remaining when Molly Breen's corner kick found Maddie Brosler's head in front of the Gators' goal. Brosler's header to the left post just beat the dive by Gateway keeper Brooke Fairman (six saves).

"They play it in the air," Estelle said. "We were challenged all the time on long throw-ins and great corner kicks. We play it in the air, but we weren't quick enough.

"Every one of their kids play the ball in the air," he continued. "I've got seven or eight, but I need to get 11. We're going to learn from this" for next year.

The Mohawks doubled the lead nearly 10 minutes later when Danielle Cullen took control from 28 yards out on the left post and fired high. The ball hit the bottom of the post just out of Fairman's reach and bounced straight down over the goal line for a 2-0 advantage with 26:44 remaining.

"We played better against the corner kicks after that first" goal, Estelle said. "But that second (goal) was perfect. There was no way my keeper could have gotten to it."

Huff said, "That was a big insurance goal. Coming back from the first one was going to be hard, but knowing we had two more to go makes it a lot tougher."

The score remained 2-0 throughout the second half as the play was even and the ball remained in the middle of the field for most of the final 40 minutes.

"Throughout the entire season we've been a second-half team," Huff said. "We came out in a lot of games and la-di-daed and then realize we have to pick it up in the second half."

The Gateway offense Saturday generated two corner kick opportunities, but had just one shot on Millis goalie Amanda White and no good scoring chances.

When the final whistle blew, Estelle ran out on the field clapping to embrace his players.

"They are a great team," Estelle said. "I'm so proud of everything they've accomplished this season."
