Thomas Gambino, longtime educator

Ashfield - Thomas W. Gambino, 92, of 449 Main St., passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at the Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds.

Born in Summit, N.Y., on Jan. 15, 1917, he was the son of the late Joseph and Jennie Gambino. He received his bachelor's degree from Kean University in New Jersey, later earning master's degrees from Rutgers University and Seton Hall University. He was an educator for the State of New Jersey Department of Education, retiring in 1978 as the director of pilot demonstration and exemplary programs. He has lived in New Jersey for most of his life, moving to Ashfield 23 years ago. Thomas enjoyed playing golf, writing, woodworking and making furniture. He was also an avid Yankees fan.

He is survived by his wife, Susan (Herold) Gambino; his four sons, Richard Gambino of New Jersey, Michael Gambino of Ohio, James Gambino of Boca Raton, Fla., and Gerald Gambino of Clark, N.J.; his three daughters, Meredith Firmani of Manahawkin, N.J., Jill Hajman of Fanwood, N.J., and Courtney Gambino-Rider of Troy, N.Y.; his brother, Dominic Gambino of Florida; his sister, Frances Marcelliano of Summit, N.J.; his 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Thomas Gambino Jr.

Services for Thomas will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Academy at Charlemont, 1359 Route 2, Charlemont, MA 01339.

The Ahearn Funeral Home in Northampton is in charge of arrangements.
