BRADENTON, Fla. - Mary Kathryn Graves Sartwell, of Bradenton, formerly of Gloucester, Mass., lifelong speech and language pathologist and avid outdoorswoman, died Nov. 9, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was a dedicated speech and language pathologist who spent her working life helping students with language needs. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Northampton, achieved a degree in speech communication from the University of Massachusetts where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma and completed her graduate work with a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the University of Vermont. A lifelong learner, Mary completed several college courses and attended many seminars to keep current with her work.

She was a speech pathologist in Marion, Conn., Essex Jct. and the Washington Northeast School District in Vermont, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and lastly, the Swampscott public schools.

Mary also had a love of the outdoors. She enjoyed adventure travel with her husband and children that included skiing, sailing, golfing or just soaking up the sun at the beach. She was a member of the Eastern Point Yacht Club, where she was an active 210 racer, and served for years as chairperson of the Junior Sailing Program. She was also a member of the Palma Sola Yacht Club.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, David Allen Sartwell; her son, Steele Allen Sartwell and his wife, Kerri Ann; her daughter, Kathryn Carrie Sartwell; her brother and sister-in-law John and Susan Graves; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Christopher and Janet Sartwell, Ronald and Cheryl Sartwell, and Janet and Stanley George; nieces Shelly Dexter, Kathryn Shaw, Georgina Sartwell, Redina Sartwell, and Aubrey Sartwell; and nephews Leo Sartwell, Chris Sartwell, Caleb Sartwell, Brett Sartwell, Adam Sartwell, Mathew Sartwell, Scott George and Jay Graves.

She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Harold Graves, and her in-laws, Leo and Inis Sartwell.

Her memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect St., Gloucester on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 9:30 a.m.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elks Club, 97 Atlantic Road, Gloucester. Friends and relatives are invited to both events.
