Minutewomen open with OT win
The University of Massachusetts women's basketball team opened its season by rallying for a 79-73 win in overtime over Boston University Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center.
The Minutewomen (1-0) did not lead until Diatiema Hill (14 points, six rebounds, four assists) scored after seven seconds of overtime to put Umass ahead 69-67.
The Minutewomen outscored the Terriers (0-2) 12-6 in the overtime.
Boston University led 38-30 at halftime.
Kristina Danella led UMass with 21 points and eight rebounds, Kim Benton added 18 points and Nicole Jones contributed 13 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks.
The Minutewomen remain at home to host St. John's in the first game of a doubleheader at the Mullins Center starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The men's team will play Cornell at 7:30.
Smith 60, Albany College of Pharmacy 39 - Lisa Marie Vuono had a double-double (13 rebounds, 10 points) as the Pioneers (1-0) opened their season by winning the Tyler Tip-Off Sunday afternoon in Northampton.
First-years Devon Quattrocchi and Daron Dean each scored 12 points in their collegiate debuts for Smith.
Westfield State 72, UMass Dartmouth 64 - Junior center Cassy Jouannet of Conway, a graduate of Frontier Regional, scored 12 points and added four rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Owls (1-0) in their season-opening win Sunday in Westfield.
Freshman guard Jenny Bell of Northampton had five points, two rebounds and two steals for Westfield.
Dowling 95, Merrimack 86 - Despite a career-high 27 points by sophomore Genn Roy of Granby, the Warriors (0-1) lost their season opener Sunday in Oakdale, N.Y.
Roy added seven rebounds and tied her career high with four assists.
Men's basketball
Westfield State 75, Curry College 66 - Junior forward Chris Jurkowski of Belchertown scored six points and added a game-high eight rebounds for the Owls (1-0) in their season-opening win Sunday in Westfield.
