Marion Whalen, long career in food service
SOUTH HADLEY - Marion S. (Swiatlowski) Whalen, 76, a South Hadley resident since 1971, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at the Holyoke Medical Center.
Born in Chicopee on Nov. 23, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Katherine (Kawecha) Swiatlowski. Marion worked for many years in food service. She started her UMass, Amherst career in 1968 as the first manager of the then new, Top of the Campus Restaurant. She later worked as the public schools lunch director for the city of Chicopee, and as the food service director for the former G. Fox in Hartford, Conn. Marion then returned to UMass, Amherst to serve as food service manager of the dining commons until she retired in 1997.
She is survived by two daughters, Michelle Davidson of Texas and Jo-Ann Bourguignon of South Hadley; a son, Joseph Bourguignon of Germany; a stepdaughter, Deborah Fortier and her husband Ray of Vermont; a stepson, Michael Whalen and his wife Debra of Connecticut; one brother, Stanley Swiatlowski Jr. of Arizona; one sister, Sophie Zielinski of Chicopee; three grandchildren, James Craven of England, Megan McDonnell of New York and Mark Girardi of Vermont. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.
The funeral for Marion will be on Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the Ryder Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., South Hadley followed by a funeral Mass in St. Theresa Church at 11:30 a.m. and burial in Notre Dame Cemetery, both in South Hadley.
