Cebula gives Rams OT win

WESTFIELD - Suddenly, it was over, and the Granby girls soccer team was one win away from a Western Massachusetts Division 3 championship.

Tori Cebula scored on a counterattack, putting a shot past Lenox goalkeeper Kathy Prescott with less than two minutes remaining in the first 10-minute overtime period of the semifinals as the Rams stunned the Millionaires 1-0 Friday night at Westfield State College.

The goal for the third-seeded Rams (15-2-3) came shortly after Maggie Gervasi of Lenox was taken off by an ambulance after a heavy collision inside the Granby box.

"I'm really proud of all the girls, everyone stepped up today," Rams coach Nuno Pereira said. "Lenox is an outstanding team, the best team we've played all year. For us to come out and grind it out, stay with them and able to pull it out, says a lot about this team and our confidence.

"We're excited. Hopefully, we have some gas left for Sunday," he added.

Granby advanced to play No. 5 Gateway Regional at 11 a.m. Sunday at Westfield State College for the sectional title.

The seventh-seeded Millionaires (12-7-2), winners of the Berkshire County South Division championship, had a 9-3 shot advantage after the first half and a 12-7 advantage after regulation. The scoreboard, however, had zeroes on it.

"I thought we possessed the ball very well today. We had the better of them for a lot of the game," said Lenox coach Matt Cote. "We didn't have a lot of scoring opportunities, but I felt at any moment, things were going to turn our way.

"All we needed was one good scoring opportunity and we'd break their back. It didn't happen."

The first of two 10-minute overtime periods had a lot of play between the boxes, but no serious scoring opportunities.

Finally, with about three minutes remaining, the Millionaires got the ball inside the Granby 18 when Gervasi collided heavily with a Rams defender inside the box and went down on the artificial turf.

She lay there for some 10 minutes before she was removed on a backboard and left the field in an ambulance. There was no report on her condition or the exact extent of her injury.

There was a second collision outside of the box, and the Millionaires were awarded a free kick. Kayleigh O'Brien took it and her shot just missed sneaking under the crossbar.

Granby brought the ball quickly into play and Adara Ash sent the ball ahead to Cebula on a counterattack. Cebula sped down the right wing, cut toward the net and took a shot that beat Prescott to the goalie's right.

The Rams celebrated while the Millionaires looked on in shock.

"Adara passed it through. I knew I had to be quick, get a shot off," recalled Cebula. "It worked great. I put it to the far post with adrenaline, I guess."

"We're so confident defensively and we really do our jobs," Pereira said. "We were hoping for a counter and sneak one out, and we did right there. They had a free kick and we defended it well, and we caught our break."

The Millionaires dominated the first half territorially, but had nothing to show for it. Lenox outshot Granby 9-3 and had five corner kicks to two for the Rams.

The second half was different as Granby had a 3-2 shot advantage. Lenox did have the best scoring opportunity of the final 40 minutes when Erin Barry set up Gervasi on a nice play, but the Granby defense beat her to the ball.
