Cats are trainable - and that's not a punchline
People have low expectations of cats. But they shouldn't. Take Storm, a trained cat who once passed a Canine Good Citizen test with flying colors - performing commands like "sit," "stay," "come" and "down."
"I'm watching the dogs and I commented, ¿My cat can do all that,"' said Storm's owner, Sam Connelly. "She said, ¿Want to take a shot?' like it was a big joke."
Training cats isn't just for fun, says CJ Bentley of the Michigan Humane Society where shelter cats are trained to "high-five." and walk into a carrier. Cats need more than just playtime to be well-adjusted.
"To teach them to be able to solve problems on their own can reduce the stress. It gives them control over a situation." People expect pet cats to "just hang out, which isn't realistic," said Melissa Chan, behavior specialist at the Houston SPCA. People think cats aren't trainable because they lack a dog's desire to please, "but we have things that cats want. That's all that matters."
