Blue Devils earn late football win

Matt Parsons scored on an 3-yard run with 1 minute, 5 seconds left in the fourth quarter and D'Jon Andrews added the two-point conversion to give Northampton a dramatic 8-7 win over Central at home Friday night.

"We always tell the kids that we play to win," Blue Devils coach Ken O'Brien said of going for two points. "I considered kicking (the point after), but then my assistant coaches were all yelling to go for two and kind of snapped me out of it."

Northampton (2-7, 2-5 AA) has now won two in a row after losing its first seven games. It will look to end the year on a three-game winning streak against rival Amherst Regional at home on Thanksgiving at 10 a.m.

Friday's game matched the Blue Devils against former Northampton and University of Massachusetts standout Valdamar Brower, now in his fifth year at Central (4-5, 2-4) and second as head coach.

"It's a great win for us," O'Brien said. "It's always been a good rivalry and it's even better now with #T' there."

D'Shane Smith scored on a 53-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead.

Northampton overcame an injury to running back D.J. Fuentes in the first quarter with Parsons and Andrews taking over in the backfield, compiling more than 250 rushing yards.

"On the final drive, it was four yards and a cloud of dust," O'Brien said.

Jake Konowitch had an interception for a defense that allowed less than 200 total yards from scrimmage and seven first downs.

"We played bend-but-don't-break defense all night," O'Brien said. "Our defense was superb, especially in the second half."

Westfield 45, South Hadley 24 - The Bombers (3-7) scored 19 unanswered fourth-quarter points to turn a tight contest into a big win at Bullens Field in Westfield.
