Rams goalie in right place, right time

Granby - With under a minute to play Wednesday, Granby goaltender Abby Hurlburt was positioned perfectly to reach in front of her face and catch a header by Ware forward Chelsea Socha that came off a corner kick.

Hurlburt made the save, which stopped the Indians' last scoring opportunity and preserved a shutout in the Rams' 1-0 win in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament quarterfinals.

"I was just in the right place at the right time," said Hurlburt about the last of her five saves. "It was a good header but I was in a position to make the save."

Third-seeded Granby (14-2-3) advanced to play No. 7 Lenox (12-6-2) in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Westfield State College.

The Millionaires defeated No. 2 McCann Tech 8-2 in a quarterfinal on Tuesday.

With No. 1 Smith Academy's 5-0 loss to Lee in the first round, the Rams are now the top remaining seed in the tournament.

Ware ended its season at 9-9-2.

Granby scored the only goal of the game with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Stephanie Isabelle stripped the ball from a Ware defender, and rushed down the left sideline until she was within a few feet of the goal line.

Isabelle crossed the ball to Brooke Labrie, who finished into the upper-right corner of the net.

"Isabelle got the ball over to me," said Labrie. "I was waiting there, picked my corner, and then one-timed it."

The Rams controlled the offense, putting 15 shots on net. Ware goaltender Sydney Simons made 14 saves.

Granby freshman Adara Ash and junior Carmen Marino were a dominant duo, dominating play and creating scoring chances.

"We were just trying to score by getting shots," said Ash. "We wanted to get the ball toward the net and be in the right place."

The strategy led to 13 corner kicks for Granby, though none produced a goal. "That is something we're going to have to work on," said first-year Rams coach Nuno Pereira about finishing the opportunities. "It was tough because they pulled a few players back, and in a one-goal game we couldn't be too aggressive with how many players we put towards the net."

Granby also played well defensively, limiting the Indians to five shots on goal.

"We did a great job containing some of their players. This was our first tournament game, and we really picked up the intensity, got back as fast as we could, and got first touches on the ball," said Hurlburt.

Pereira added, "It could have been tough for us. We don't have much tournament experience, and being the third seed we got a first-round bye so we hadn't played a game in almost two weeks.

"The team worked hard in practice, and I was pleased with the way we stepped up our game for the tournament.

"My biggest concern is that we'll be playing on turf. That isn't something we've done before," said Pereira about Friday's semifinal. "Our team may not have a lot of tournament experience, but we've won every big game we've played this year. That brings us confidence - the team knows it can rise to the challenge."
