Easthampton falls on penalty kicks

The Easthampton boys soccer team was eliminated from the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament by the slimmest of margins Tuesday.

After playing No. 3 Monson to a standstill through two 10-minute overtimes, the sixth-seeded Eagles led during the first round of penalty kicks until the Mustangs tied it with a shot that hit the crossbar and dropped straight down and into the goal.

Easthampton again took a lead in the second, sudden-death round of penalty kicks but Monson rallied to finally win on its third shot after a miss by the Eagles.

The Mustangs (15-3-1) outscored Easthampton 6-5 on penalty kicks for the 2-1 win. Monson advanced to play No. 2 Palmer (16-2-1) in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday at Ludlow.

"It was a typical Monson-Easthampton game - very spirited, very well officiated," said Eagles coach Bill Cullen whose team finished at 13-6-1. "The kids stepped up and it was quality stuff all the way up and down. Both squads were spent by the end of the game.

"We played twice during the regular season and they beat us 1-0 on an own goal, and then we played them at Williston under the lights in another 1-0" loss, Cullen added.

"You've got to tip your cap to the other team," Cullen said. "We've got 13 seniors leaving us and they wanted it badly. But they've got nothing to be ashamed of."

Peter Gilbert scored the goal for Easthampton about seven minutes into the second half, on an assist from Brandon Laliberte. He took the ball at midfield and one-timed it past Monson goalkeeper Michael Ketterman (five saves).

The Mustangs tied the game late in the second half on a restart with a direct kick that was headed over the Easthampton wall by Ben Murphy just out of the reach of Eagles goalie John Volpe (who also had five saves).

Defense dominated in the two overtimes.

Laliberte, Jeff Jurkowski and Tyler Henry scored for Easthampton in the first round of penalty kicks. Tom Lucia and JoJo Coleman then converted for the Eagles in the second round.

Easthampton played without Dylan Sudnik and Dan LaPointe who were both injured in the Eagles' 3-0 win over Drury in the first round Sunday.

The Eagles dedicated Tuesday's game to Sudnik who continues to recover at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton from a broken bone in his back, Cullen said.

Easthampton's 13 seniors are Gilbert, Laliberte, Jurkowski, Henry, LaPointe, Alex Parent, Alex Morris, Nick Whitney, Mike Martin, Dan Levin, Max Hickle, Greg Monska and Jordan Sullivan.
