Swine flu clinic set for kids in Amherst
AMHERST - A limited supply of flu shots for the H1N1 virus will be dispensed at a flu clinic Wednesday at the Amherst Regional Middle School.
The clinic, at which about 2,000 doses of swine flu vaccine will be available, will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Town Manager Larry Shaffer said Monday that the clinic will be a joint effort of the town of Amherst and the University of Massachusetts, which is providing nursing students to administer the shots.
"We expect to distribute all of them Wednesday," Shaffer said.
The clinic will be limited to those 17 and under, accompanied by a parent or guardian, pregnant women, and those who are living with infants younger than 6 months.
"We need to save our doses for those population groups that appear to be at most risk," Shaffer said.
The clinic is only for Amherst residents, as Shaffer said he expects other communities will received a comparable supply.
Shaffer said the vaccine will be divided equally between injectable and nasal vaccines.
"Our goal is to get our people vaccinated as quickly as possible and as completely as possible," Shaffer said.
Participants can download vaccination registration forms at www.amherstma.gov, www.arps.org and www.umass.edu.
Insurance cards should be brought to the clinic, though lack of insurance will not affect eligibility and there will be no out-of-pocket costs for anyone who comes.
A hotline at 259-3075 will be established today to answer questions from the public. Shaffer said the townwide emergency alert system will also be used to notify the public.
