Lee sweeps Easthampton volleyball
Lee - The Easthampton girls volleyball team lost to Lee for the second time in two weeks Monday night, and was eliminated in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament quarterfinals.
The No. 2 Wildcats (19-0) used a dominating service game and solid defense to sweep the 10th-seeded Eagles 25-19, 25-10, and 25-10.
Easthampton, which finished its season at 16-6, was defeated by Lee 3-1 during the regular season two weeks ago.
Middle hitter Jen Rannikko had five kills and a block for the Eagles on Monday, and outside hitter Julia Volpe added three kills and five digs. Outside hitter Melissa Hurley contributed four kills for Easthampton.
It was the final high school match for Eagles seniors Rannikko, Volpe, Hurley, Megan Grygorcewicz, Zuheily Morales, and Corrin Halford.
The Wildcats advanced to the tournament semifinals and will host No. 3 Ware.
Lee coach John Warner said having played Easthampton already was an advantage.
"The beauty of playing Easthampton again is I already had a game plan," he said.
But despite winning the first set, the Wildcats' game plan was slow to develop as the Berkshire County champions struggled with their serves and at times played shaky defense.
But when junior Ashley Raftery served 15 consecutive points in the second set - eight of them aces - Lee built a commanding 18-2 lead in the middle frame and was not threatened.
"Once the service pressure was on, we put them on their heels," Warner said.
