Spartans oust Blue Devils
East Longmeadow 6, Northampton 1 - The 10th-seeded Blue Devils (5-8-6) could not recover from two early first-half goals scored by the No. 7 Spartans (8-6-5) in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Tournament Sunday in East Longmeadow.
Kyla Krumpholz scored the lone goal for Northampton in the 30th minute with an assist by Molly Ross.
"They were the better team today," Blue Devils coach John Ruyffelaert said of East Longmeadow. "They outplayed us everywhere on the field. They won the midfield and their strikers finished."
Emersyn Pullan saved five shots in goal for Northampton.
It was the final game for Blue Devils seniors Pullan, Krumpholz, Ross, Natalie Paine, Sarah Englaish, Elena Reinhardt, Brooke Tompkins and Erin King.
Belchertown 5, Hoosac Valley Regional 1 - Two goals by Cate Taras ledthe No. 8 Orioles (10-7-2) past the No. 9 Hurricanes (8-10-1) in the opening round of the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament Sunday in Belchertown.
Taras scored the game's first goal in the 28th minute off an assist from Natalie Caney.
Brit McDonald, Jordan McConnell and Emma Norden also scored for Belchertown while Julia Beech, Alexis Stockwell, Rachel Soucia and Caney each had an assists.
Samantha Sugrue made six saves in goal for the Orioles.
Belchertown advanced to play at top-seeded Hampshire Regional in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Orioles coach Chris Mogavero said that his team's early scores were important.
"I thought it was a very good first half," Mogavero said. "Once we scored the third goal, it put the pressure on and I think it broke their backs. I think our depth was the key."
