Hopkins survives first round on PKs
The Hopkins Academy boys soccer team used a 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks to advance past Sabis with a 1-0 win in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament Sunday afternoon in Hadley.
The teams played a scoreless regulation and two 10-minute overtimes, before Scott Fournier, Tim Cooke, George Copoulos and Karl Kapinos scored on penalty kicks.
Sabis scored on consecutive penalty kicks to tie the match before Andrew Bemben (seven saves) denied a Bulldogs shot to set up Kapinos for the game winner.
The No. 5 Golden Hawks (12-2-5) advanced to play No. 4 Gateway Regional (10-2-4) in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Huntington.
The 12th-seeded Bulldogs finished (7-11-1).
"We played very well defensively," Hopkins coach Justin Campbell said. "It was everything you can think of in terms of how tournament soccer should be."
Easthampton 3, Drury 0 - In their first Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament action after this year's realignment, the No. 6 Eagles (13-5-1) scored three first-half goals and shut out the No. 11 Blue Devils (3-13-3) Sunday night at Williston Northampton.
Brandon Laliberte started the scoring for Easthampton in the game's fourth minute off a pass from Thomas Lucia.
Jeff Jurkowski scored in the seventh minute off an assist by Tyler Henry. And in the 29th minute, Jurkowski fed JoJo Coleman for a score.
John Volpe made six saves in goal for Easthampton.
The Eagles advance to play at No. 3 Monson (14-3-1) at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Easthampton lost twice to the Mustangs during the regular season, both 1-0.
Eagles coach Bill Cullen said he tried to give a lot of his players tournament experience on Sunday.
"I wanted to get as many guys in the game as I could," said Cullen. "There's a strong possibility that they won't see as much time when we play Monson, but they responded well."
Girls soccer
East Longmeadow 6, Northampton 1 - The 10th-seeded Blue Devils (5-8-6) could not recover from two early first-half goals scored by the No. 7 Spartans (8-6-5) in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 1 Tournament Sunday in East Longmeadow.
Kyla Krumpholz scored the lone goal for Northampton in the 30th minute with an assist by Molly Ross.
"They were the better team today," Blue Devils coach John Ruyffelaert said of East Longmeadow. "They outplayed us everywhere on the field. They won the midfield and their strikers finished."
Emersyn Pullan saved five shots in goal for Northampton.
It was the final game for Blue Devils seniors Pullan, Krumpholz, Ross, Natalie Paine, Sarah Englaish, Elena Reinhardt, Brooke Tompkins and Erin King.
Belchertown 5, Hoosac Valley Regional 1 - Two goals by Cate Taras ledthe No. 8 Orioles (10-7-2) past the No. 9 Hurricanes (8-10-1) in the opening round of the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament Sunday in Belchertown.
Taras scored the game's first goal in the 28th minute off an assist from Natalie Caney.
Brit McDonald, Jordan McConnell and Emma Norden also scored for Belchertown while Julia Beech, Alexis Stockwell, Rachel Soucia and Caney each had an assists.
Samantha Sugrue made six saves in goal for the Orioles.
Belchertown advanced to play at top-seeded Hampshire Regional in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Orioles coach Chris Mogavero said that his team's early scores were important.
"I thought it was a very good first half," Mogavero said. "Once we scored the third goal, it put the pressure on and I think it broke their backs. I think our depth was the key."
