Gateway beats Catholic, needs win for share of McGrath South

The Gateway Regional boys soccer team kept its league championship hopes alive with a 4-0 win over Holyoke Catholic in Chicopee Tuesday.

The Gators now must beat Pioneer Regional tonight in Northfield to earn a tie for the McGrath South title with Smith Academy and Hopkins Academy.

The Falcons (13-2-3, 4-1-3) and Golden Hawks (11-2-5, 4-1-3) have completed their regular-season schedules.

Sam Cummings had a goal and an assist for the Gators (10-2-3, 3-1-1 McGrath South) in Tuesday's win, while Gabe Craig and Keegan Cornell each scored once.

Josiah Cook and Kevin Ray had assists for Gateway.

Ray (three saves) and Josh Stebbins (two) handled goalkeeping duties for the Gators.

Brett Valcourt had 25 saves in goal for Holyoke Catholic (6-9-2, 0-7-1 McGrath South).

The loss marked the last regular-season match for Gaels seniors James Clancey, Tyler Limoges, Ryan Ferriter, Andy Slowick, Erik Roberts and T.J. Zulch.

Northampton 3, Frontier Regional 1 - Ellis Cooper and Eli Wilson-Berkowitz each had one goal and an assist as the Blue Devils (9-6-3) ended their regular season with a win at home.

Jon Butler also scored a goal for Northampton.

Ben Weaver had five saves in goal for the Blue Devils.

Keegan Downie scored on a penalty kick in the second half for the Red Hawks.

Goalie Max Slocombe had six saves for Frontier (3-12-3).

The loss marked the final game for Frontier seniors Stephen Ferro, Greg Shelkey, Ian Lacey, Jaren Lutenegger and Slocombe.

Girls soccer

Westfield 3, Northampton 0 - The Blue Devils (5-7-6) lost for the first time this year by more than one goal as they finished the regular season with the setback in Westfield.

Goalie Emersyn Pullan made seven saves for Northampton.

Chicopee Comp 1, Belchertown 0 - An own goal handed the Orioles (9-7-2, 6-3-1 Kurty-Fielding) a loss at home in their regular-season finale.

Goalie Samantha Sugrue made four saves for Belchertown.

Girls volleyball

Frontier Regional 3, Millis 1 - The Red Hawks (18-0) knocked the defending Division 3 state champion Mohawks (9-10) out of postseason contention with a 25-14, 25-17, 15-25, 25-21 win on the road.

Cassidy Stankowski (18 kills, five blocks and seven digs), Kendra Ouimette (17 digs, three aces) and Holly DeWitt (eight kills) all had strong performances for Frontier, which is seeking its fifth straight western Massachusetts championship.

Pioneer Regional 3, Belchertown 1 - The Orioles (10-10) finished the regular season with a 25-21, 8-25, 25-20, 25-23 loss at home to the Pioneers (14-7).

State Division 2 Golf Championship

Shawn LeBeau of Belchertown placed 64th with an 86 at Blackstone National Golf Course in Sutton.

Duxbury won the team title with a total of 313.

Joseph Harney of Catholic Memorial earned medalist honors with an even-par 72.

LeBeau carded a 4-over 76 at the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament at the Country Club of Greenfield on Oct. 26 to qualify for the state tournament.
