UMass advances to A-10 tourney

Sophomore Lauren Yelinek scored her first goal for the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team which defeated Richmond 1-0 Sunday at Rudd Field, and qualified for the Atlantic 10 Tournament beginning Thursday.

It is the first tournament appearance for the Minutewomen (6-10-2, 5-6 A-10) since 2004.

UMass, the No. 6 seed, will play No. 3 Fordham (8-11-1, 7-4 A-10) at 8 p.m. Thursday in Charlotte, N.C. No. 4 St. Bonaventure (10-10, 7-4 A-10) and No. 5 Saint Louis ( 7-8-4, 4-4-3) will play in the other first-round game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The tournament semifinals are Friday and the championship game will be Sunday.

Yelinek scored for the Minutewomen at 36 minutes, 37 seconds of Sunday's game, with assists by Meredith Fox and Lindsey DiOrio.

Lauren Luckey (first) and Emily Cota (second) each played a half in goal for UMass and made two saves apiece.

Amherst 2, Wesleyan 1 (OT) - Meg Murphy scored both goals, including the game winner in the second minute of overtime, for the second-seeded Jeffs (12-2-1) who defeated the No. 7 Cardinals (8-6-2) in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals Sunday in Amherst.

Murphy's game-winning goal came on a free kick when she bent a shot around the right side of Wesleyan wall and into the top left corner of the net.

Allie Horwitz made six saves in goal for Amherst which had a 15-12 advantage in shots.

The Jeffs advance to play No. 3 Middlebury at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at top-seeded Williams in the tournament semifinals. The Ephs will play No. 4 Tufts in the other semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The championship game will be at noon Sunday.

Holyoke Community College 2, Springfield Technical Community College 0; Holyoke 2, Manchester 0 - The Cougars (15-4-1) advanced to the district playoffs with the two wins during the weekend in the regional semifinals and final.

Holyoke will host Genesee (N.Y.) Community College (10-8-2) at noon Saturday.

Freshman Kelly Omasta of Hadley was the winning goalkeeper for the Cougars in the regional games. She made six saves and had an assist in Saturday's win over Manchester, and had eight saves Sunday against Springfield. Omasta now has 10 shutouts this season.

Both goals Saturday were scored by freshman Kristyn Lemon of Montgomery, a graduate of Gateway Regional.

Wellesley 3, Mount Holyoke 1 - Mary Cooke scored the only goal for the Lyons (4-12-1) who lost Saturday at Wellesley in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Tournament.

Ingibjorg Magnusdottir made five saves in goal for Mount Holyoke which was outshot 25-9.

Men's soccer

St. Bonaventure 1, UMass 0 - Fabrizio Savarino headed in the only goal of the game at 31:31 for the Bonnies (9-6, 5-2 A-10) who shut out the Minutemen (6-6-3, 3-4 A-10) Sunday at Rudd field.

Shane Curran-Hays made three saves in goal for UMass which was outshot 14-9.

The Minutemen are in a three-way tie for eighth place in the conference with games remaining at Richmond on Friday and George Washington on Sunday. The top six teams will qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament beginning Nov. 12.

Middlebury 2, Amherst 1 - Harrison Watkins scored both goals, including the game winner at 89:12, for the sixth-seeded Panthers (9-4-2) who upset the No. 3 Jeffs (11-3-1) in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament Sunday in Amherst.

The winner came less than 14 minutes after Casey McNamara tied the game for Amherst.

Lennard Kovacs made three saves in goal for the Jeffs who were outshot 10-7.

Westfield State 2, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 2 (2 OT) - Sophomore Justin Laliberte of Easthampton and Sam LaBonte of Westhampton scored for the Owls (8-7-2, 5-1-1 Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference) who tied Saturday in Westfield.

Laliberte was named to the MASCAC weekly honor roll after he scored two goals last week, including the game winner in a 4-3 win over WPI.

Elms College 2, Becker College 1 - Junior Courtney Johnson of Belchertown scored the game-winning goal for the Blazers (5-13, 3-4 New England Collegiate Conference) Saturday in Chicopee.

Johnson's goal at 62:04 came after he controlled a pass by Sam Senecal on a corner kick.
