They see mayor's accomplishments as hard-won and numerous
To the editor:
We like Michael Bardsley and have supported him in all his City Council races. We have also quite publicly opposed Clare Higgins on some stances she has taken as mayor. That said, the decision for us in the Northampton race for mayor is clear. We're voting for Clare.
Under Higgins' leadership, in this bad economy, Northampton has financed and built a new fire station, a senior center and a skateboard park and saved and re-energized the Academy of Music. The mayor has protected essential city services - police, fire and public works, supported the schools and preserved the city's excellent bond rating (with cost savings to the city).
Clare listens well and patiently. She also is willing to make the difficult decisions that inevitably make some people unhappy and have a political cost, but that's what a mayor must do.
We have heard and considered the argument for a need for change in the city's leadership. We are unconvinced. The better choice here is Clare Higgins as proven by her accomplishments, her understanding of the issues facing the city and her articulated vision for Northampton's future.
