King scores four to lead Minutewomen
Senior forward Cher King scored four straight goals for the 19th-ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey team which defeated La Salle 6-3 Friday at Garber Field.
It was the first time since Sept. 6, 1997, that a Minutewoman scored four goals in a game. Erica Johnston scored four that day in an 8-1 win.
On Friday, Kim Young scored the other two goals for Umass (11-8, 2-3 Atlantic 10).
Alesha Widdall made two saves in goal for the Minutewomen.
UMass is in fifth place in the Atlantic 10 standings and hosts West Chester in the final regular-season game at noon Sunday at Garber Field.
The top four teams in the conference will play for the Atlantic 10 championship Friday and Nov. 7 at Garber Field.
Amherst 1, Trinity 0 - Molly Malloy scored the only goal at two minutes, 35 seconds of the second half for the 15th-ranked Jeffs (11-3, 6-3 New England Small College Athletic Conference) who won in Hartford, Conn., to close their regular season.
It was the first loss of the season for the fourth-ranked Bantams (13-1, 8-1 NESCAC).
Emily Vitale made seven saves in goal for Amherst to earn the shutout.
The Jeffs are seeded third in the NESCAC tournament and will host No. 6 Bowdoin in a quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Men's soccer
UMass 2, Duquesne 1 - Sam DeNormandie scored the wining goal at 87:38 for the Minutemen (6-5-3, 3-3 Atlantic 10) who won at Rudd field.
Ben Arikian scored the first goal for UMass at 13:13.
Chris Piekos had five saves in goal for the Minutemen, who were outshot 13-10 by the Dukes (8-6-2, 3-3-1 A-10).
UMass hosts St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. Sunday at Rudd Field.
Amherst 2, Trinity 1 - Casey McNamara and James Mooney scored for the Jeffs (10-3-1, 6-2-1 NESCAC) who won in Hartford, Conn., in the final regular-season game.
Lennard Kovacs made seven saves in goal for Amherst, which was outshot 17-15 by the No. 21 Bantams.
The Jeffs are seeded third in the NESCAC Tournament and will host No. 6 Middlebury in a quarterfinal game at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
Women's soccer
UMass 1, George Washington 0 - Sydney Stoll scored her fifth goal of the season at 85:26 to give the Minutewomen (5-10-2, 4-6 A-10) the win at Rudd Field.
Lauren Luckey (first half) and Emily Cota (second) each had three saves in goal for UMass which was outshot 13-8 by the Colonials (6-8-4, 3-5-2 A-10).
The Minutewomen will play their final regular-season game at 11 a.m. Sunday against Richmond at Rudd Field.
Amherst 0, Trinity 0 (2 OT) - Allie Horwitz made 10 saves in goal for the Jeffs (11-2-1, 7-1-1 NESCAC) in the double-overtime tie in Hartford, Conn., to finish the regular season.
Amherst is seeded second in the NESCAC Tournament and will host No. 7 Wesleyan in a quarterfinal game at noon Sunday.
Women's volleyball
Bowdoin 3, Amherst 0 - Laura Hyman, Katherine Kanoff and Jackie Berkley had eight kills apiece for the Jeffs (19-6, 6-3 NESCAC) who lost 25-23, 25-22, 25-15 at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Amherst ends the regular season when it hosts Tufts at 11 a.m. Saturday.
