Patrick says there's still no union deal on concessions in budget cuts

BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Deval Patrick says the state's labor unions still have not agreed to job-saving concessions as he prepares to announce how he plans to cut $600 million from the budget.

Patrick said Wednesday there will be some layoffs regardless because he plans to eliminate some programs entirely. But he has warned he will have to cut up to 2,000 jobs if employees don't agree to furlough days or other cost-saving measures.

He plans to outline his cuts by the close of business Thursday.

He also says that while Chief Justice Margaret Marshall warns against court cuts, the concern is "not very unlike" what he is hearing from others concerned about preserving their state funding.
