UMass QB Havens will start vs. Maine
When the University of Massachusetts football team takes the field in Saturday's critical 3:30 p.m. game at Maine, it will still be Kyle Havens starting at quarterback.
"There's no controversy here," UMass coach Kevin Morris said. "Havens will be the starter."
Havens was benched in the second half of Saturday's loss at Richmond after throwing four interceptions and losing a fumble. He completed 10 of 25 passes for 78 yards.
He was replaced by Scott Woodward, who was 11-for-23 for 137 yards, but was intercepted twice.
Havens has had an up-and-down season in his first year in Amherst after transferring from Diablo Valley (Junior) College in California.
Havens has passed for 219.1 yards per game, which is among the best in the Colonial Athletic Association, but his 13 interceptions are the most in the conference.
HERNANDEZ BACK - Morris believes that sophomore running back Jonathan Hernandez, who suffered a hand injury and did not play in the second half against Richmond, would be back for Saturday's game against Maine.
"He'll be fine but we just kept him out because he couldn't feel his hand for a while and then came back and wanted to go back in," Morris said. "He's a tough kid. He was rearing and ready to go but we felt best to keep him out at that point."
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK - Northeastern, which earned its first win of the season, 27-7 over Towson, landed a pair of CAA weekly honors.
Junior running back John Griffin had 200 yards on 29 carries and was named the CAA's co-offensive player of the week. It was the most yards by CAA back this season.
His teammate, freshman linebacker Kyle Hunte, was the league's rookie of the week. He had four tackles and a sack for 14 yards.
William & Mary running back Jonathan Grimes shared the offensive weekly honor with Griffin. He had 158 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries in the Tribe's 24-3 win over James Madison.
Justin Rogers of Richmond had five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery in the Spiders' 34-12 win over UMass.
Three field goals, including a UNH-record 54-yarder and an extra point, was enough to earn New Hampshire's Tom Manning the special teams player of the week.
GAME OF THE WEEK: UMass at Maine, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. - It's not a great week for showdown games in the conference. But for the Minutemen, Saturday's game is essentially a playoff game as they likely cannot afford a loss if they still want to get into the field.
POLL POSITIONING - Losing to the No. 1 team in the country on the road cost UMass five spots in The Sports Network top 25 and seven spots in the FCS Coaches Poll as the Minutemen fell to No. 19 and 23, respectively.
The CAA's three top teams - No. 1 Richmond, No. 4 Villanova and No. 5 William & Mary - kept those spots in both polls. New Hampshire moved up to No. 8 in the TSN and No. 9 in the coaches poll. Delaware continues to rise to No. 16 (TSN) and No. 19 (coaches).
MILESTONE WINS - Villanova coach Andy Talley and Northeastern both produced significant wins Saturday.
Talley captured No. 200 in his career when his Wildcats beat Rhode Island 36-7 and downplayed its significance.
"To be candid, not to downplay it, the playoffs are more important," Talley told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "The national championship is more important to me right now. Not to be cocky in any way, shape or form, but I don't think I really have to prove anything to anybody at this point. In terms of victories, it's just not that important to me. It truly, really isn't."
Northeastern's victory over Towson was its first win this season.
"It proved to them and to all of us that if you continue to play hard and stay the course, things will come together," Northeastern coach Rocky Hager said. "We still have a ways to go, but that's why it says coach on the shirt. We have to continue to bring them along."
