State eyes 'green' appliance rebates

BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts officials are hoping to spend more than $6 million in federal stimulus money on a cash rebate program to encourage consumers to upgrade to energy-efficient home appliances.

Officials said on Monday that the state has already filed the details of the proposal with the federal Department of Energy.

If approved, the state plans to launch the program in February. The state estimates that 27,000 old, inefficient refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and clothes washers could be taken out of service, saving about 2.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. That's equivalent to 4.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide or enough energy to power 340 households for a year.
