Springfield police continue murder probe

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Springfield police are continuing to investigate the shooting death of a man found in the driver's seat of a Lexus.

Carmelo Adorno Jr., 24, of Springfield, was found by police early Saturday morning with a gunshot wounds to his head and lower back. He died from his injuries later on Saturday.

Police said Sunday they have determined the murder was drug related and are following leads in the case.

Adorno is familiar to police. They say he has had more than 10 arraignments in Hampden County, mostly for drug-related crimes, over the past six years.

The murder marks the city's 16th of the year.

Worcester neighbors object to tree house

WORCESTER (AP) - Michael Chapman's neighbors in Worcester originally didn't have any problems with him building a tree house.

But that was before his plans for the hideaway, just like the old oak that it surrounds, grew to four stories. The multi-platform project, now 50-feet tall, towers over the neighbors' yards and invades their privacy, they say.

Chapman tells the Worcester Telegram & Gazette that he wanted to build something unique because he considers the 300-year tree to be "spectacular."

The city's Department of Inspectional Services isn't impressed. Officials have ordered Chapman to tear down the structure because it violates zoning ordinances.

Chapman says he'll follow the orders and destroy the tree house by Nov. 3, but says he first wants to finish it.
