Minuteman soccer team ends brief skid

Stuart Amick and Andrew Henshaw scored second-half goals for the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team which broke a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over Saint Joseph's Sunday at Rudd Field.

Shane Curran-Hays made three saves in goal for the Minutemen (5-4-3, 2-2 Atlantic 10) to earn his second shutout of the season.

UMass had a 14-7 shot advantage over the Hawks (0-11, 0-3 A-10).

The Minutemen host Rhode Island at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rudd Field.

Amherst 2, Colby 0 - Spencer Noon and Matt Lewis scored for the Jeffs (8-2, 4-2 New England Small College Athletic Conference) who earned their fourth straight shutout Saturday in Waterville, Maine.

Lennard Kovacs made two saves in goal for Amherst.

Both teams took six shots.

Westfield State 6, Worcester State 0 - Sophomore midfielder Justin Laliberte of Easthampton had two assists for the Owls (6-6-1, 4-1 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference) who won Saturday in Westfield.

Massasoit Community College 4, Holyoke Community College 0 - Goalie Josh Croake of Easthampton made three saves for the Cougars (2-11-1) who lost Saturday in Holyoke.

Women's soccer

UMass 3, Rhode Island 2 - Therese Smith scored in the 87th minute to give the Minutewomen (4-8-2, 3-4 Atlantic 10) the win Saturday at Rudd Field.

Cristina Adams scored the first two goals for UMass.

Goalie Emily Cota made eight saves for the Minutewomen, who were outshot 20-8.

UMass plays at Xavier as 7 p.m. Friday.

Amherst 2, Colby 0 - Jill Kochanek and Hannah Cooper scored for the 15th-ranked Jeffs (9-2, 6-1 NESCAC) who won Saturday in Waterville, Maine.

Allie Horwitz made five saves in goal for Amherst which earned its third straight shutout.

The Jeffs had a 19-10 shot advantage.

Holyoke Community College 2, Massasoit Community College 1 - Goalie Kelly Omasta of Hadley made six saves for the Cougars (11-4-1) who won Saturday in Holyoke.

Babson 3, Mount Holyoke 2 - Lauren Orr and Mary Cooke scored for the Lyons (2-11, 1-5 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference) who lost Saturday in Babson Park.

Ingibjorg Magnusdottir had seven saves in goal for Mount Holyoke.

MIT 6, Smith 0 - Goalie Lindsey Gregor made nine saves for the Pioneers (3-9-1, 2-3-1 NEWMAC) who lost Saturday in Cambridge.

The Engineers outshot Smith 25-3.
