UMass edges Xavier

Sophomore defender Andrew Henshaw scored his second career goal at 35 minutes, 58 seconds off a corner kick taken by Mark Dangleis to give the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Xavier in Cincinnati Friday night.

Goaltender Chris Piekos made four saves for the Minutemen (4-2-3, 1-0 Atlantic 10) in their conference opener. It was his fourth shutout of the season.

The Musketeers (1-6-1, 0-1 A-10) had a 13-9 shot advantage.

UMass plays at Dayton at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Women's soccer

La Salle 3, UMass 1 - The Explorers (7-5-2, 1-3-1 Atlantic 10) scored twice in the second half to win at Rudd Field.

Sydney Stoll scored the first goal of the game for the Minutewomen (3-7-2, 2-3 A-10), converting an assist from Sydney Stoll.

Emily Cota made four saves in goal for UMass, which outshot La Salle 17-12.

The Minutewomen host Fordham at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Field hockey

UConn 3, UMass 0 - The seventh-ranked Huskies scored three second-half goals to win in Storrs, Conn.

Goalie Alesha Widdall made nine saves for the No. 10 Minutewomen (9-4) who were outshot 30-2.

UMass opens its Atlantic 10 schedule at 1 p.m. Friday when it travels to Philadelphia to play Saint Joseph's at Drexel University.

Women's volleyball

Amherst 3, Emmanuel 0 - The Jeffs (12-3) swept 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 on the first day of the Crabtree Classic at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Conn.

Cristy Meier led Amherst with 20 kills.

Springfield 3, Westfield State 0 - Junior Bethany Stosz of Amherst had three kills and three blocks for the Pride (19-2) as they opened the Tom Hay Invitational in Springfield with a 25-22, 25-15, 25-15 sweep.
